I was going to write about this, then I wasn’t, but screw it, now I am. It’s about my nemesis in fantasy sports. A guy I’ve worked with for 27 years now. He’s not a very good fantasy owner, typically on the bottom of the standings. Yet, when it comes to playing me… his team plays like all stars. Our fantasy baseball matchup this week was no different.
He has won before… once. Of course, this is where the “curse” starts for me. It was in our fantasy football championship game; I was projected to crush him. No need for me to get cute; just play the guys that got me there, and I’m golden. Well, I guess I should have planned for my starting QB, Tony Romo, to only play one series that week… He got hurt after one series, and I got a big fat zippo from my QB; I still almost pulled it off. It was sickening… but… that’s the breaks, right? I wish I could go through all of our matchups over the years, especially since then, but what good would that do? Just take my word for it; since that day, he has pretty much owned me in our fantasy matchups.

Not only did he score the most points in the league this week from his 8th place position in the standings, but he added injury to this insult. In fact, my team endured many injuries this week, and yes, I’m putting the blame entirely on my fantasy opponent. I already have 2 guys stashed on the IL… Thor and Sale, both expected to return to their respective rotations in June; I had lost Santander the week before, so my slots were filled, but this week… oh man, this week, things got really bad. First it was injuries to my 2 Cubs players, making it even worse; Jake and Nico went to the IL. Then it was Gausman who had COVID vaccine side effect, then it was deGrom who got his start delayed (more to come on him later), then it was Nimmo not playing, and finally going on the IL, then it was Kike Hernandez, my waiver wire pickup that went down, then it was Byron Buxton, and then of course, on Sunday, deGrom went out of the game… probably headed to the IL. So from 3 players on IL to 8 players on the IL, and possibly 9, in the matter of a week… all thanks to my nemesis.
Not only did he beat me, which he usually does, he took out a quarter of my roster; this F-ing guy. He probably won’t win again this year… oh wait, he does play me one more time, so that’s at least one more win. How does this shit keep happening? Tell me I’m not the only one who has someone like this, who pops their head out from the basement of the standings to lay a beat down on me on a regular basis. I can’t wrap my head around this, except to chalk it up to luck… just flat out dumb luck. But I guess that’s what fantasy sports is. Eventually the cream will rise to the crop, like it always does, but on any given week, you can run into a buzzsaw; my buzzsaw’s name… Bat out of Hell. I wish he would go back… bastard. This is almost sounding like a Hate File…
