Remember those big tests you prepared for back in school? Maybe you’re still in school dealing with that stress… I believe in the theory that life in general is a series of tests. Well, the Cubs had an early season test this past week, and I guess the only thing you can say is: They Aced It!
It was supposed to be the week the Cubs were brought back down to earth. It was the reality check that everyone was waiting for. Well, we’re still flying high… higher than before… our chests sticking out further. It’s amazing how fans of a franchise that hasn’t won in 108 years can feel so confident; it’s amazing, but true.
24-6 is where we currently sit. Three games against the NL Central’s 2nd best team proved to be a slam dunk. Sweep… on the road… in Pittsburgh. Four games against Washington the NL’s 2nd best team proved to be just as easy. This time it was a 4 game series in Wrigley; this time is was a 4 game sweep.
7 in a row against the projected best competition in the National League. Yes, the Mets, a couple teams in the NL West, and the Cards probably have their own opinions about who the other best teams in the NL are, but there is one fact. The best team in the NL, and in the major leagues, is our Chicago Cubs.
Yes, we’re less than 20% through the season… only in the month of May. Yes, I know I keep saying that. I’m trying to temper my own excitement here OK? I’m trying to breathe, and not get too excited. In the big scheme of things, nothing has been won yet.
But it sure does help to open the season 18 games above .500. That #wearegood tag sure is fitting…

A Javier Baez walk off home run was the latest flavor of our winning streak. Read that it was the first Cubs walkoff HR on Mother’s Day since Jody Davis in 1982. Jody, Jooo-deeee Davis. Yes, this came on our day when the ace was not an ace. So the 7th win will have to wait, but the Cubs won again, and that’s all that matters. In fact, the Cubs have won the last 19 times Jake has took the hill. There’s a ton of amazing stats about his run… read up on them.
The Cubs start is the best since that World Series winning team of 1907… the team that repeat in 1908. It’s the best start for any NL team since 1977, and you know what, the Cubs aren’t satisfied. I love it.
There are rumors that they are interested in getting another outfielder… a left fielder. Carlos Gonzalez, Jay Bruce, Nick Markakis, Josh Reddick, and Ryan Braun are all among the names reported per ESPN. Really? Yeah, why not!
Keep adding. We’ve already had to deal with our share of injuries. Keep adding depth. I’m starting to feel at this point, right or wrong, that injuries is the only thing that derails the Cubs.
It’s an exciting time; I’ve probably said that before… I probably will say that many more times. It’s exciting to ace a test, and that’s exactly what the Cubs did this past week. So all other teams in Major League baseball can try to keep up (the Sox are doing the best job of it), but there is one team that is head and shoulders above everybody right now, and yes, that team is the Cubs. Somebody wake me up.

Definitely aced the early season test, but it is still very early. The Cubs need to keep stringing Ws together and avoid the long losing streaks. Forget about records. Focus on having the best record in baseball, having home field advantage, staying healthy, and being ready to end the next year streak…just win Cubbie blue train!
