May 8, 2021: Playing Out The String

posted in: Blackhawks, Bulls | 0

As the seasons wind down, and the Bulls and Blackhawks are busy playing out the string of remaining games, my interest has waned. I’m still tracking their wins and losses, but have kind of lost the energy to tune in and watch them play. With the Cubs on pretty much every day, and the excitement around the Bears top draft pick, it just sort of happened; is it over yet?

Of course, NOW we are allowed to go to the UC to watch them play; thanks for that. Better late than never? Well, if late was a couple weeks into the season, or even halfway, shit, or even 2/3 of the way in, then OK; we’re basically talking about coming while everybody is packing their stuff up. Once this was announced, the last NBA and NHL team to do so by the way, there were 3 games left in the season for the Bulls at home, and 2 games left for the Blackhawks; whoopie-di-do! Still, like the sucker, I mean, like the fan that I am, I looked. The first chance was this Friday as the Bulls hosted the Celtics. I had some tickets lined up, but… we couldn’t agree on payment method. Buying second hand tickets is always a tricky subject. For the most part, I’ve been very fortunate; I’ve only been burned on some concert tickets the one year… cost me $300+ out of my pocket; I should have known better. Other than that, all my transactions have been on the up and up. Still, because of that, I take extra precaution, especially when going to good old Craigslist. It would have been a nice last minute Mother’s Day gift for my wife, but… no go on the first available Bulls game.

The Hawks tickets are too much for the last 2 games, including Sunday vs the Stars. The Bulls have 2 more games next week against vs the Nets on Tuesday and the Bucks on Sunday. The Bulls still are mathematically alive for that new final 10th seeded playoff spot, but it’s highly unlikely. It looks like this year will come and go, and no Bulls or Hawks games in person. I know it may be small in the big scheme of pandemic impacts, but it’s on the radar for me. Guess it’s wait for next year time…

This isn’t a new story for the teams though, as far as getting into the postseason. For the Bulls, once it becomes official, will be the 4th straight year, and 5th out of the last six years without playoffs; sad. For the Hawks, I guess we do have to count last year’s play in qualification, it will be the 3rd out of four years without the playoffs… that after 9 straight years of playoff hockey including of course the 3 Cups. As I’ve said a dozen times before, for the Bulls this year was more of a disappointment, especially after what I considered to be a great in-season trade; I guess that’s the key… “in-season”… maybe they haven’t had the time to gel. For the Hawks, this was expected. Either way you cut it, not having your team in the playoffs in both basketball and hockey is a horrible way to go through life.

And now I guess I can understand why my interest has declined down the home stretch. I thought I’d be excited to watch the last few games; I still can. But no, I’ve already switched gears; I hate that this is becoming the norm…
