There was this VHS tape that I watched so much back in the day. It was full of NBA highlights. I’d watch it before I went to play basketball; it would get me pumped up. I’d see the Jordan clips; I’d try to do the reverse layups like he did. I’m sure this VHS tape still exists by my parents’ house, but for now, YouTube will have to do.
I introduced my son to it the other day; figured it was a good time. He’s seen plenty of highlights, mostly Jordan and the Bulls stuff. Now, we’re watching The Last Dance together; watching the episodes every Monday morning before I go to work. He’s played basketball for a couple years now. We play downstairs in the basement at home. Yeah, I typed in “NBA Superstars” and there it was…
We watched it; he loved it. It brought back a lot of memories for me too. It starts of with Magic, Bird, and Jordan, before going to Barkley, Olajuwon, Wilkins, Thomas, Jabbar, and finally Erving. There are some mixed highlight clips in there too… some big dunks & blocks, a flashback to the NBA superstars of the past, a look at the little guys in the league. It’s really cool how each highlight clip is a perfect blend of the music chosen and the videos shown. We’ve watched it a number of times since then.
Then I doubled up on the dose of NBA superstars of my childhood. For the first purchase of old sports cards, I bought 9 packs of 1989-1990 NBA Hoops cards; I think I mentioned that already. Anyways, a lot of the guys that we saw in those videos, we got in those packs: Jordan, Olajuwon, Barkley, Thomas, and Magic. I told him to be careful with these cards; he put them in his little plastic container. We’ve looked through them a couple times already. This reminder of all the stars of the 80s got me thinking; who is my all time NBA team?

Should this be made up of guys I’ve seen play? That’s the easier way to do it. Should this be open to any player ever to play in the NBA? This route would take a little research. How in depth do I want to get in selecting these players? Am I selecting a full roster, or just a starting five? Am I selecting guys that would go well together, or just the best overall? I think I’ll do it at some point; still thinking about it.
The one choice that is obvious is Michael Jordan at starting point guard. Any all-time team that does NOT include him, is really not an all-time team. Where we go from there is interesting. I have initial thoughts on the PG & C positions; Magic and Hakeem feels right. There are plenty of choice for the forwards; Bird is definitely in the conversation. I’m biased to Barkley, seeing him play. Again, these are guys that I’ve seen play; they all seem to be from the same era… that makes sense.
Yes, and they all had feature videos on this NBA Superstar VHS tape. I’m telling you, that video is etched in my mind. I don’t ask my son to watch it again; he asks me. Of course I say yes. I’d like to think he’s getting a really good lesson on NBA history. Counting down until Monday morning…
