May 5, 2024: Double Dipsy Do Do

Sunday brought a conflict in the sporting world of my son. He had his last track meet scheduled Sunday morning; he had a baseball game scheduled for early afternoon. We would NOT be able to do the same thing we did last week, where he performed most of his events at the track meet and we made the baseball game. It would be one or the other. My son wanted to go to the baseball game, but… it’s not up to my son… not yet at least. With this being his last track and field event of the year, of which there were only three, plus the fact that this is with his school, the choice was an easy one; he would to go the track and field event. He would miss the baseball game. All good.

I was able to see his first event before I cut out to coach the squad. His team finished 3rd in the 4×400 relay. One of the kids was sick; that definitely hurt the team. By the time my son got the baton, there was way too much to make up… 3rd place would have to do. In his second event, because his classmate was missing, the door was open for 2nd place in the 800M individual; I didn’t see this one with my own eyes, but I did see his 2nd place medal that he brought home… boo ya! In his final event, the 4×100 relay (OK, there was javelin too… ), his team finished in 5th place. When I saw him again, he would have 3 new medals to add to the collection; I put up that second medal holder in his room on Sunday evening… haha. So, the track meet was a success!

On the baseball field, we were trying to get to 500. Our record heading into this afternoon’s tilt was 1-2. The plan was to have our 10th & 11th pitcher take the mound; yes, after the game, we would have had 11 of our 12 kids pitch so far this season… this is GREAT! First kid that took the mound, did just fine; this was his first time pitching… EVER! Yeah, not too shabby. The second kid that took the mound, didn’t even want to pitch this year; he changed his mind just before the game started. I’m glad he did. This kid was lights out, no joke. He pitched 4 innings, the maximum any kid can pitch, and threw only 36 pitches!!! Yeah, there was an inning when he threw 3 pitches for 3 outs… crazy! This game was nuts in general. Trailing by 1 run in the bottom of the 5th, and a kid on 3rd base, our best hitter was at the plate; he was unintentionally intentionally walked… after a 1-1 count, the coach went out to talk to the pitcher; the next 3 pitches were 5 feet outside… that’s against the rules; I was pissed. Plus, our next kid came up, and the ump called him out on a pitch at his chin; I yelled at the ump… don’t typically like to do that. As fate had it, the league commissioner happened to be walking by the next inning; I told him about this illegal maneuver. Some people with their thirst for winning… Anyways, we still had a chance; down by 1 run, going to the bottom of the 7th, we had a chance for a walk-off. First kid, doubles. Next kid, doubles, but kid had to stop at 3rd because it was almost caught. So, 2nd and 3rd, nobody out… kid comes up… he was 3 for 3… he went 4 for 4… ball up the middle… one run scores, center fielder misplays it, 2nd kid scores, winner winner chicken dinner… boo ya! I really wanted this one, especially after how that other coach acted; really proud of the boys. Called my son, told him… he was excited too. Yeah, this Sunday was a double dipsy do do.

Whew… what a day. Another great weekend in the books. No more track meets; only baseball going forward… until swimming starts back up. This baseball season has already been really fun; look forward to more great things ahead. Talk soon.
