May 5, 2023: One for Five

Was thinking about some kind of “five” themed blog for today’s post on Cinco de Mayo. Of course, the 5th day of the 5th month of the year. This day has been a memorable one for me since I was about 5, when I met one of my friends that I still talk to today. His birthday just happens to be May 5th. We’d celebrate on Cermak in front of his house, as the parade went by. We weren’t drinking Coronas quite yet, meaning that would come later in the day; we started off with something a little more inconspicuous since we were standing on the street. Vodka Lemonade was the drink of choice one year; it’s not exactly a drink that you think about for that day, but it did the trick. Yeah, I talked to him on this morning, as I do every 5th of May going back to… whew… a long time. Yes, no text, but a phone call; we may see each other 1-2 times per year depending on how it all breaks out. I thought about one of the funniest stories he ever shared with us. He was a young kid; we were all still in grammar school. He was riding on a bicycle with someone; he wasn’t sitting on the seat, but like on that cross bar in front of the seat. As they were riding along, his foot got caught in the spokes; to be more specific, one of his toes… it almost got cut completely off. Yes, this is a funny story, just wait. So he goes home to tell his parents, and as he gets there, he runs across the freshly washed kitchen floor, dragging his toe, dripping blood across the whole way. His mom sees him, and starts yelling at him for messing up the floors; meanwhile, his toe just dangles… haha. His toe was fine btw.

Yeah, certain friends, the ones I still keep in touch with over the years, are just like family; some of them are like those family members that you don’t see for a minute, but when you do, you just pick right up. Speaking of family, my wife’s aunt is turning 65, so we celebrated on this May 5th; that was a lot of fun. I had to chill on the drinking, since I was driving, but seeing most of her family in one place for the first time in a long time… it was great catching up with everyone. There’s one that has a son at Syracuse; he’ll be the starting left tackle this year. Because there was a Syracuse O-lineman just taken in this year’s NFL draft, there is the possibility… that would be awesome. Their youngest is like 6’2″ already; he’s 13 years old. I couldn’t stop looking at him; big kid! I talked to another guy that I hadn’t spoken to in a while; he was telling me about his son playing baseball as a freshman in High School. He just had a game where he tore the cover off the ball, going deep twice; the season is just getting rolling. We ended up talking about sports betting too; go figure… haha. He told me about a crazy parlay he put in that would have paid him 87K from a $1 bet; he missed by one leg!!! How crazy is that shit???

Speaking about betting; this Cinco de Mayo was not so nice to me. I went one for five, with my only win being the Carolina Hurricanes. Lost 2x on the Sixers, lost on the Nationals, and lost on the Nuggets, those bastards. Felt like a good time to take a night or two off. With the weekend looking to be very busy, it worked out OK…
