There are just some days that come along that are action packed with all types of sporting events. May 5th this year qualifies as one of those days.
Lots of history on Cinco de Mayo. I started the day talking to one of my friends whose birthday happens to be on this day. I hadn’t talked to him in a long time, but we always talk on our birthdays. After all, I went to kindergarten with this guy. Yeah, that’s part of every May 5th. We used to celebrate with him on this day…
With his family living right on Cermak Avenue, and with my first apartment being right down the street, we watched some parades head down that street on his birthday. Yeah, it was the annual parade, that for some reason, got cancelled this year. I didn’t bother reading why, but figured it had something to do with money.. doesn’t it always? We’ll be trying to get together to play cards soon.
There were some memorable 5ths in LA too. Since it’s historically a big fight night, there’s usually always a party going on. For this particular De La Hoya fight, I think it was Mayweather, I started drinking pretty early in the day…. like those big sports cups full of Vodka. Did I already tell this story? Anyways, it was an ugly ugly night, as Hillbilly Jim aka my drunk name, was in full force that evening. Not good.
But, we certainly made up for that with the next memory on that day. May 5th is the day I proposed to my wife. I won’t bore you with all the details, but I faked an injury when we were running, going down to my knee, and pulling the ring out of my pocket. She said Yes, and the rest is history.

So back to THIS year. The Derby is something I’ve been watching the last few years. This year was no different. We selected our winners, and watched the favorite win again… I think for the 6th straight year? Yes, my horse, Good Magic made it close, but in the end, came up short. It is pretty exciting.
Unfortunately before that I saw the Cubs blow a game against the Cards; those always hurt. 4 in a row on the downside for the Cubbies; 0-4 in May. Then it was the Sixers blowing it against the Celtics. The NHL results were good, seeing the Caps and Jets both win. Then there was a unfortunate game winning shot for the Queen, and a quick knockout by GGG. It was an action packed sports day.
Thankfully, I didn’t see that game winning shot live; I think I would have… I plead the 5th. Also didn’t see the fight… it was supposed to be a big night with the GGG Canelo fight, but.. that didn’t happen. Supposedly on track for September now…
Yeah, we finished this night with a margarita & Dos Equis, and a couple of Coronas, as we binged on our new TV show. Peaky Blinders is damn good. Like I need another reason to fall behind on my blog… Onto the 6th…

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Man, time has gotten away from me. This was supposed to be the GGG vs canelo rematch. You know, since GGG got robbed the first time around, he was going to make up for it this time (judging tbd). Too bad canelo keeps eating bad meat…hahaha, yeah I bet! Guy’s juicing and got caught. Boxing is more and more a joke with these juice heads and horrible judges! GGG ended up pounding someone else into submission. As for the Derby, the favorite won and will go on to the Preakness as the favorite there, too. Justify triple crown…stay tuned.
