Lots to talk about from episodes 5 & 6 from The Last Dance. I mean, how good is this shit? Obviously many folks are enjoying this documentary, but for us from Chicago, growing up during this time, man… the memories… these were some great, great times. Let me start with the shoes.
Air Jordans; do you remember when you got your first pair? I’m sure many people do; that would be a pretty cool segment actually… or a Twitter thread or something like that, with everyone reminiscing about their first pair or Jordans. This episode absolutely portrayed this accurately; everybody wanted them. Of course, not everybody could afford them; I couldn’t.
I had everything I needed growing up; I was definitely blessed. When the first pair of Air Jordans came out in 1985, I wasn’t caring about what gym shoes I was wearing. I was only 9 years old. As I began to get older, I began to want more “cool stuff”; Jordans were in that category. Like I said, my parents bought me everything I needed; at that point, the limit on a pair of gym shoes was $50. If I wanted a pair more expensive than that, I needed to pay the difference. OK…

I missed out on Sophomore football camp at High School; I guess playing football in High School just wasn’t meant to be. After that I worked as a bus boy at an Italian restaurant in the neighborhood. It wasn’t until I got my first “real job” right out of high school; I was 17 years old. When I got my first paycheck, that’s when I decided the time was right. I was still living at home, so I got the $50 “stipend” from my parents, which was cool. I then made the trip to Niketown on Michigan Avenue. If I was finally going to get a pair of Js, I was going to go there.
I’ll never forget walking in there, trying the shoes on. The girl asked “so are you taking them?” Well, um, hell yeah. I walked out of the store with those bad boys on my feet; a big upgrade over the Pro Wings from Payless Shoe Source… haha. I walked out of there feeling like the shit ok! They were the IXs; mostly white, with the black around the bottom. I wore those until they fell apart. I believe the next pair were the XIIIs; they were blue with gray trimming. Those were beautiful. That’s it… other than the ones sitting in my closet right now; I got a pair of Vs for my 40th birthday. Still don’t want to wear them… I will though… eventually. I guess I should have broke them out for this series, and put them on every Monday morning to watch the episodes with my son. There’ll be another time…
At this point, at 8 years old, my son already has had more Jordans than I ever did. At first, he didn’t really get into it, but he is now. He really loves gym shoes, and with all the MJ education he’s been given, plus now with The Last Dance, I have a feeling I know which shoes he’ll be wanting more of. He has 2 pairs in his closet right now that are waiting for him. It’s fun. Who would have thought this almost didn’t even come to be? If it wasn’t for his mother’s advice… man, how history would have changed. I’m pretty happy with the way things turned out; all of it. Let’s dig in to some other parts of these episodes next.
