May 4, 2017: Hard To Forget

posted in: Blackhawks | 2

As I flip through the sports channels, it’s hard to forget about the Blackhawks.  I still see the NHL playoffs going on.  I flip the game on, but I can’t watch it long. We should still be watching the Blackhawks.

Then I think, even if they got past the first round, could they have beaten their next opponent.  Obviously, playing like they did, it didn’t seem like they could beat anybody.  But this year is already in the books; we were talking about how this happened and what they need to do.

I guess the whole trade Crow for a stud and sign Darling for cheaper deal ain’t happening.  Darling was traded to the Canes for a third round pick.  It was good that the Blackhawks got something.  It was great that Scott got his big chance. At 4M per, I guess we wouldn’t have saved that much.  I hope he does well, and now the Jeff Glass backup goalie era begins.

At some point we’ll have to draft a goalie, but now the focus should be elsewhere.  We do have a lot of young guys that should be given chances to succeed.  Some were already given one this year in the playoffs; it didn’t go too well.

Just like most of the other guys, the young guys were not good.  Schmaltz and Hartman flopped in their first chance.  I still like both of them going forward.  I also liked Hayden, Vinnie, and Kero.  Which one of these guys will be part of the core going forward?  Which one will be traded to get somebody now?  There’s still Motte and 19 year old DeBrincat that could be impactful at some point. We won’t see that other Russian kid for a while.  To borrow a phrase from the Bulls plan, do we have enough young and athletic guys on the team?

We can never have enough of those guys.  And honestly, like we talked about, most of the “other” guys still have a lot left.  It’s truly a balancing act, with the salary cap not helping.   Would you be satisfied with the three cups we’ve already won this decade?

We’re never satisfied; we always want more.  We feel like these guys could win another.  I thought they should have won in 2014; I thought they had a good chance this year.  Still, 3 Cups in a decade is pretty good.

How do we get that fourth?  We’ve reviewed most of the roster, their age, and the cap hits.  I threw out a couple suggestions, but now it’s time to bring it all together.  It’s time to tell you why they lost.  It’s time to tell you what moves need to be made.  It’s time to play GM and put the Hawks in the best position to win in 2018.

I don’t think I’ll watch much of the rest of the NHL playoffs…same with the NBA… same reason.  With our teams out, the interest just isn’t there.  Settling into baseball now, and preparing for football.  But there’s still some business to attend to with both teams.  Next time around, we’ll complete the analysis of the Hawks, then move onto the Bulls.  Still like the Hawks position a whole lot better.  I don’t think much has to be done, but every time I say that, there is a move made.  Kitchen, the Ice Hogs coach, Darling…will there be another move before my conclusion?

To barrow a quote from a previous blog; not worried. The Hawks are a franchise that know how to draft and more importantly they know how to develop young talent. Only thing that worries me is that they keep bringing back former players via FA or trade which indicates to me that they have a hard system to learn and maybe some players are intimidated by that fact.

For me, Hockey and Basketball are over and we should all be in CUBS mode until late November. Other than keeping an eye on trades and FA signings I have pretty much checked out of the other two sports. Hawks will be just fine, the Bulls are “re-building” and who knows what the Bears are doing. Go Chicago!!!

Thanks darling! You get your shot to be the guy now, and I think you will do well. Goodluck!
As for the Bhawks, I agree with Mo, they seem to draft and develop young talent pretty well. As for the young guys mentioned, I dont have a problem with any of them. At the same time, I would not be upset if any of them get traded. Schmaltz and Hayden seem like guys with the biggest upside. Maybe hayden can be that big body in front of the net on offense, making life difficult for goalies. The Bhawks are not afraid to make moves. They also know how to play the cap room game. I think the Bhawks will be fine. Avoid big injuries, work on the special teams, and build that team chemistry. Looking forward to next year’s team and bouncing back!
