The whole reason we have to address this is because his catcher, Gimenez, guy that just had his first AB the other day, opened his mouth. He said that Yu feels everybody in Chicago hates him because he’s been on the DL twice. Wow… thought that was his guy?
Why would he put it out there like that? Whether or not Yu actually said that, or referred to that… whether or not he was serious, or was just feeling a bit down… why would you say that? That was the stupidest thing to do.
Now, there is blood in the water… A perceived fragile psyche has now kind of been confirmed. Is Yu really a head case?
He hasn’t pitched well; that is a fact. He has a big contract. He replaced a World Series hero in the rotation. And yes, he’s now been on the DL two times… for the flu and tricep tightness… not exactly major stuff. What does all this add up to?
I guess concern. I’m not hating Yu. He needs to pitch better, and actually, the last start before he went on the DL was his best start. If there is any reason to dislike him, it would be his performance thus far. That’s only normal, but… give the guy a chance. I believe he’ll pitch better; his history tells us so. You’re in Chicago now buddy. You’re playing for a Cubs team, a recently minted champion, that expects greatness now; anything less is unacceptable. Welcome to our new world. Toughen up, and earn that dough. Pitch like we all know you can; we’ll love you.
But what if he doesn’t? What if the World Series meltdown wasn’t pitch tipping? What if coming up short in the World Series was his peak… not the loss he needed to personally propel him to want to take the next step? What if the old Yu is gone? Well, then, we may be using that 4 letter word that starts with H. But until then, let’s give the guy a chance. The ball is in your hands Yu; let’s do it! Go Cubs!
