The streak is over, the streak is over, biddy, ba, ba… The Cubs could not close out their second consecutive sweep over an NL Central opponent on Sunday afternoon in Wrigley, losing to the Reds 5-1. The loss ended their 6 game winning streak, but hey, at least the Cardinals lost.

This marked the first time the Cubs lost by more than 1 run since April 30th, also against the Reds, when they fell 4-2. Read that again. It’s been a month since the Cubs lost by more than a run! OK, ok, close only matters in horseshoes and hand grenades; is that they saying? I miss horseshoes. When I was old enough to lift one of those iron beauts, I was flinging them around our backyard; thankfully, I never knocked out my brother or sister. Horseshoes has been replaced by bags I guess… never a huge fan of that game, but… it IS a game, and thus, I will play it and enjoy it… when I’m winning… haha. But hand grenades? No experience there; it’s so easily for me to get distracted. Yes, the whole 1 run thing; it sounds impressive… it is impressive… but what does it mean? A loss is a loss is a loss, regardless of it’s by 10 runs or 1 run. Well, it means the Cubs play a lot of close games for starters. 20 one run games thus far this year out of 52 games played; we’ve already played 52 games?!?! The Cubs have an 11-9 record in those 20 games, if I can count right. 38% of their games have been decided by the slimmest of margins; a quick search tells me the MLB average is around 28%. I think the fact that the Cubs are playing so many close games is a good thing.

I know every game is important; yes, each of the 162 matters. It’s how well you do collectively that determines if you advance on; this is rocket scientist stuff I’m dropping. As long as the Cubs are winning more than they are losing in these contests… if/when the Cubs are able to advance to the playoffs… there are going to be tight games. I imagine that percentage of 1 run games climbs come the postseason. The experience gained in these close affairs will be beneficial come the playoffs; now all we have to do is get there. A big thing that helps in these close games is the bullpen; I think by now we all know how good the pen has been. Another 5.1 scoreless on Sunday by the way. Will this scoreless streak reach 38.1 again? Yes, the bullpen will help keep games close if we’re losing; they will help us hold a tight lead. This is only one component of winning in tight games. Another is the starting pitching, which wasn’t very good on this beautiful day. Jake took the L in this one. Jake has been solid. If you expected the Jake from 2015-2016, you were going to be disappointed. Yet, Jake will battle out there, just like this team; although they didn’t put up much of a fight vs potential Cy Young winner Tyler Mahle… 1 hit through 5 innings?

All good things come to an end. I will take this loss, as long as that means a win is coming on Monday in the series opener vs the Padres. Of course, the reason why THIS game is a bit more important than the other 162, is that I will be in attendance. My son and I will grab our gloves and head out to the mecca. Quick weather check shows me a bit overcast, but 73 degrees; I’m good with that. Can’t wait to be back for the second time this year; right on that once a month pace. See if we can pick that up a bit over the summer. First game was an L; looking to get back to 500 on Monday. We’ll do OUR best to make that happen… Let’s go Cubs!
