May 30, 2018: Round Four

Are we all excited?  This year will mark the 4th consecutive matchup between the Golden State Warriors and the Cleveland Cavaliers.  This sucks, and let me tell you why.

The Bulls aren’t part of this!  I’m sure people were upset seeing the Bulls in the Finals year after year, a total of 6 out of 8 years, and only because Jordan retired… twice.  If he didn’t retire… twice, the Bulls would have made (& won) the Finals 9 straight years.  Do you think the Knicks could have finally beat us in the playoffs?  Do you really think Hakeem would have tarnished Jordan’s perfect Finals record?  Nah.  And then, in 1999, it was a strike shortened year… so… the Bulls would have been right back in it, and delayed the Spurs title run for a few years.  So yeah, 9 straight!  But now, it’s been 20 years!  Too damn long.

The second reason this sucks is because it’s the same matchup.  Not only is it 1 team that is back for the 4th straight year, it’s both!!!  That’s kind of sickening, but not surprising.  Any one of us could have made this casual prediction at the beginning of each of the last 4 years.  The East is a cake walk, and the Warriors are super stacked… so… we could have made some dough on this.  Unfortunately, that did not happen, at least for this guy.  Although we thought other teams may have challenged, we knew that it would be these same 2 teams.  No surprises…  why play the 82 games?

Well, if you’re sick of this matchup like I am, you would have been really sick back in the day.  The Lakers and Celtics met in the Finals 7 out of 11 years from 1959-1969.  Ugh!  But… back then, it was a different league.  There were only 8 teams in the league back in 1959, which meant there was only an East Final and a West Final before THE Finals.  In 1969, the league was 14 teams deep; a little better.  There were 8 total teams who made the playoffs, which added an extra round in there.  And more importantly, the Bulls were in the NBA at this point, joining the league in the 1966-1967 season.  Go Bulls!

So back to this year… obviously not a Lebron fan, and not a fan of the whole super team concept either.  It goes back to the lesser of 2 evils.  I was hoping for a Celtics Rockets final…  But, here we go again.  Is this good or bad for the NBA?

I guess out of all the sports, the NBA has always been the most predictable.  A superstar in this league can have the biggest impact on their team’s performance.  The NHL and MLB are crap shoots for the most part, while the NFL usually is, except if you’re the Patriots…  So even though it’s disappointing, especially if your team is light years away from competing, which is the far majority of the teams in the NBA today, it is to be somewhat expected.

Will I tune in?  Only to see the Cavs lose.  Waiting for the Bulls to reign again…
