May 3, 2018: Still in the Rebuild

posted in: White Sox | 1

Why not… haven’t talked about the Sox in a long time.  Not much to talk about honestly.  But… I did watch them against the Cardinals one night this week.

Of course it would be the one game where I would never root against them; I try not to root against them at all.  It was the 9th inning, and they had a 1 run lead.  And then they didn’t… and then they lost the game.  I see that they are very much still in the rebuild.

It wasn’t like their closer is part of the future plans anyways.  I thought Soria was good; I remember in KC he was amazing.  But now, he’s just filling in a position for the rebuilding Sox.  Kind of like James Shields, who by the way has been pretty decent.  These guys aren’t going to be around when the Sox are good.  Hey, I thought they were going to be decent this year?

Wasn’t this supposed to be the 2015 version of the Chicago Cubs?  Well, there is a long way to go still.  So that means it’s still time to pay more attention to the minor league team than the major league team.  I remember when we used to do that for the Cubs.  Yes, watching Jimenez and Kopech come along is just as important as “piling into” Guaranteed Rate field to watch the big boys play.

I thought they’d be better too.  There is still a long way to go… and by a long way I mean, still a couple years.  That World Series cross town matchup will have to wait for a while.  Yes, the Cubs lost again by the way to the Rockies, splitting the season series.

Back to the Sox though… giving them their one blog per month here.  Reynoldo Lopez has been pretty decent, the only starting pitcher who sports an ERA under 5.  Between Fullmer, Shields, Giolito, Santiago, and Gonzalez, it has not been pretty.  The two most concerning are Giolito and Fullmer… guys that are part of the future plan.  Guys that need to be part of the future plan if anybody wants to see the fruits of this plan in the next couple years.  Of course there’s still Kopech coming…

And you’d think the Sox would be active in the off season free agent market, to add both another arm and a big bat.  But before that, will be the trade deadline.  And like the 2014 Cubs, there should be some moves made, like when the Cubs traded Samardzija and Hammel.  Who will go?  Any pitcher but Lopez, Fullmer, and Giolito.  Obviously no Moncada and Anderson.  Anybody else indispensable for the right price?  Abreu will probably be mentioned at the deadline again; should he stay or should he go?

Renteria should be safe for now.  I see he’s got tossed from a couple games.  I liked him when he was with the Cubs.  I hope he can ride through the rebuild and be there for some of the payback, when the Sox get back to the postseason.

So there it was.. about 500 words about the Sox.  I’m sure we’ll be talking about them soon again.  They play the Cubs next week…

Not gonna lie, I have not watched one second of the white sox this year. I don’t even know what their record is. Based on what I hear, it sounds that they are not as close as some thought this year. This is not a bad thing. You do not want to rush the rebuild. Yes, it would be nice if it was accelerated like the Cubs, but more importantly, is doing it right for sustained success. Keep building the minor league system. Let some of the young guys get experience in the big leagues. Do not make any moves that will strap you financially. Almost anybody and everybody should be available if not part of the future plans. So good luck with the continued rebuild sox. Hoping the Cubs sWeep you this weekend! GO CUBS GO!!!
