I wasn’t too worried about this series. The second consecutive year we meet the Minnesota Wild in the playoffs shouldn’t be much different than the first. The game started off easy enough with goals by Bickell and Hossa. With a 2-0 lead going into the 3rd period, the Hawks had this one put away. Then, I started to relax and fade away… When I woke up, the game was tied 2-2. Hold on a second, am I still sleeping? No, I was awake, and just in time to see Patrick Kane do his thing with an unbelievable shot to give us back the lead. With 2nd goals by both Kane and Bickell (empty net), the Hawks won game 1 in the United Center 5-2. Series over!
I don’t want to count my chickens before they hatch, but this series doesn’t seem to be close to as hard as the 1st round. Again, that 1st round series vs the Blues should have been the Western Conference Finals. Instead, maybe the hardest series we will play is already behind us. Now, as long as the Hawks don’t think it’s going to be this easy, like myself and most fans, they should dispose of these guys from the “state of Hockey”, and move on to face the winner of Kings-Ducks.
And what about that Bryan Bickell? Here’s a guy who during the season, looked like he may not have been worth his new contract. He was non-existent at times, and was even a healthy scratch for a few games. Now, in the NHL’s 2nd season, he is earning every dollar. He earned his original contract last postseason, now is repeating history. Without him vs the Blues, we may not have moved on. His net presence, along with his physical play, has been an important reason for the Hawks early success this postseason. A special mention goes to Michal Handzus. I was wondering why we kept him this year, and now I know why. He was an important piece the 1st series as well.

What could cause the Hawks to lose this series? The only thing that I can think of is a Crawford injury. He’s another guy who got over the hump last year after winning that Cup, and is starting to make those big saves again. He still gives up a few soft goals, and his glove hand remains suspect at times. I still think he has gained the confidence to overcome those shortcomings, and make those critical saves, and play those critical games (vs STL game 3), to make the Hawks 100% sound all around.
So I say “cake walk!” I may not be dozing off like I did during Game 1’s victory, taking for granted a lead and maybe series, but I remain 100% confident in this team of ours. They’re looking better than ever, and there’s no way this team from Minnesota can keep up. Hawks sweep!
