The Cubs began Wednesday night trying to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Astros. By the end of the night, everyone was hoping to avoid an entirely different type of disaster. Getting swept would not have been a disaster period; worrying about getting swept never looked so silly. Of course I’m referring to the Almora line drive into the stands. From all indications, it sounds like the kid will be OK. Thank God.
As soon as he hit it, he winced, and shouted something…I think it was Oh My God. His line drive, which wasn’t shown on the Cubs feed, hit a little girl. From reports, she immediately went down; Almora was shaken up big time. I’m sure having kids of his own, the welfare of that little girl was immediately on his mind. I’m sure he thought the worst. Could you imagine? Having a son of my own, I couldn’t imagine.
First thought was damn, they should have been paying attention. If you sit that close to the game, you have to watch the game; even then, it sometimes cannot be avoided. The talk about extending the net came up of course; it certainly feels like a no brainer, especially when presented with the potential alternative. The current net doesn’t interfere with viewing; can’t image an extension of it would either. But again, the trade off would be worth it. You definitely still have to watch the game though…and keep your kid between you and the action to play it safe.

Of course my son, although he is one of the better fielders; certainly hope he’d be able to catch a ball hit right at him. About 36 years ago, I didn’t. My first game at 6 years old I was on the mound as the kids hit off the cone. Took a line drive off my chin, knocked me right out. Woke up with my dad holding an ice pack on my chin as I laid on the bench inside the dugout. Don’t want to relive anything like that with my son. I worry more about some of the other kids though… Constantly telling them to watch the ball, keeping them on their toes on defense, practicing and practicing catching the ball. I’ll do everything I can; pray that it is enough. Most important thing before having fun is being safe. Hope the reports from tonight can be confirmed, and the girl is ok.
As far as the that game going on, yeah, we avoided the sweep. 2 bombs, 1 great start, and a smooth save gave us the W. Great to win the game, as always, but scary when I think what could have happened, and what could happen each and every time a line drive goes into the stands. Be aware people. Step up MLB. No need to wait for the ultimate to take action. Avoiding disaster should be priority number one. Shaken up for sure.
