May 29, 2017: Brawl City

There aren’t usually a lot of good baseball brawls, especially with the best players involved.  On this Memorial Day, the Giants and Nationals celebrated by having a memorable fight.  It was Hunter Strickland hitting Bryce Harper, followed by Harper charging the mound.  I don’t mind it.

It shouldn’t get out of hand though.  This is baseball, not hockey, but… like hockey, I think these players have to police themselves.  Throwing at somebody’s head is not cool.  Throwing and hitting anybody period is not advisable, but it happens.  Why did Strickland throw at Harper?  Because he hit some HRs off him a few years back in the playoffs, that the Giants eventually won anyways?  Is it because it’s Bryce Harper, and he’s a bit cocky, and he rubbed Strickland the wrong way?  It was pretty clear that Strickland threw directly at him.  Harper knew it, and reacted accordingly.

They should let the pitcher and batter exchange a few punches, like they did in this one, then break it up.  I like Jake’s take on it, suggesting the same thing.  He said he would tell Contreras and/or Montero to wait a minute before they came and broke it up.  But kind of like that fight in Dazed and Confused, where the nerdy guy walked up and punched the tough guy, just knowing it would be broken up before he got pummeled, be careful what you ask for.  I think Jake can defend himself, but other pitchers, maybe not so much.  Well then, maybe you shouldn’t be throwing at guys.

Strickland looked like he was ready.  He connected, then Bryce connected.  Then it was broke up, and everybody got it out of their system… for now.  What’s next?  The worst part about the brawl was the collision between Samardzija and Morse; Morse is on the DL with a concussion now.  Ouch.

I didn’t read a lot about it, but maybe Strickland wanted a piece of Harper.  Maybe he wanted to go toe to toe with him.  It was entertaining that’s for sure.  It wasn’t quite Odur leveling Bautista, but with punches connecting, we got to see more than most base-brawls.  I still like the Kyle Farnsworth body slam of whoever that guy was in Wrigley.  Didn’t want to mess with Kyle.

Of course, the most memorable one, was Barrett punching AJ.  I can watch that over and over.  Then it was Big Z punching Barrett, and other almost brawls in the Cubs dugout, but the Barrett punch of AJ was classic, although I don’t want to promote violence in the cross-town series; there are enough idiots out there as it is.

It was fun seeing a bit of brawl city on Monday, but the truth is, throwing a baseball 90+ MPH, or throwing a batting helmet, or swinging a baseball bat, could seriously hurt somebody; then it wouldn’t be so fun.  Still, sometimes you need to let it out a little.  Let that ill will out with a little brawl, then move on.  That will be the next question; will they both move on?  Maybe for the short term, but I don’t think this will be forgotten.  Who’s next?

Basebrawls! It was a pretty good one by baseball standards. Both guys landed shots before everyone else made it out there. A lot of times the catcher tackles or holds the batter before he gets out there. Not in this instance. Harper was ready and so was strickland. Hopefully they both got it out of their system. Seemed like some pent up frustration on both ends. The kyle slam was pretty cool, and who can forget the barrett shot to aj…classic. The one I love is when the Ryan express pummeled ventura for thinking he could visit his mound and get away with it…headlock with punch after punch. Might have been worse than his sox managing tenure…haha. Hard to beat a good basebrawl every now and then…mano y mano and move on!
