It was the tale of 2 weekends for our baseball teams. Some of us were very, very happy with the outcome, and some of us were ready to jump out of a window. Both of the series ended in sweeps, yet Chicago baseball came out at .500. Let’s start with the good news.
The Cubs completed their sweep of the Phillies on Sunday. It was men against boys out there. The Cubs dominated the weekend series. Yes, it was only the Phillies, but they continue to leave no doubt on who the best team in the majors is. At 34-14, the Cubs have hit their high water mark of the season at 20 games over .500.
The bad news is brought to us by the Sox bullpen. Wow. Talk about an epic weekend failure. If you would have told me the Sox would be winning in the 7th inning of each game of their series against the Royals, I’d like the chances of a series win. Remember, it’s the Sox who score all those runs in the 7th inning or later. The Sox bullpen blew each and every lead. It was a 3 run lead on Friday, a 2 run lead on Sunday, and a 6 run lead… in the 9th inning on Saturday. Talk about gut wrenching…

But it was the Royals after all. They are the defending World Series champions, and they flat out own the Sox. The last 3 seasons the Royals have beat the Sox 30 out of 44 games. In Ventura’s regime, the Sox are 29-52 against the Kansas City boys. That’s not good. That’s not good because success starts within the division. You have to beat those teams in order to win the division. You have to beat those teams to get a wild card spot because of all the times you play them. It hasn’t been pretty vs the AL Central this year for the Sox. Yes, they have beat the Twins 6 out of 6 times… yay! But against the rest of the division… they are 3-9, and they haven’t even played Detroit yet. It all adds up to the Sox tumbling out of first place. 4-14 in their last 18 games ain’t gonna get it done.
The two Chicago teams that were destined to meet each other in October after the first month of the season, have now taken 2 different paths. As the Cubs reach 20 games over, the Sox plunge towards .500. As we reach Memorial Day, it’s a good time to check the standings. The Cubs are 6.5 games up on the Pirates, while the Sox are 1 game back of the Royals and 1/2 game back of Cleveland… 2 teams that have recently beat them. Detroit sits only 2 games behind the Sox in what is the most tightly contested division in baseball. The Cardinals remain in striking distance at 9.5 games back of the Cubs.
Where do we go from here? If the sweeps were any indication, it’s at opposite sides of the standings. I think the Cubs will continue to play well and lead their division, while I think the Sox we’ll be in a dog fight from here on out. Cross town World Series? It’s still possible. Well, at least we get our 4 games in July. Wonder how things will look then…

Cubs showed the phils who the cream on top is…keep rolling vs la!
The sox got a taste of their own medicine this year as they got scored on late and blew leads in all 3 games…definitely not something to continue, especially against the defending champs and division rival. It happens, though, so get the ship back on course and prepare for a dog fight all summer.
The sox have hit a long losing streak while the Cubs hope to avoid it all year. Stay the course, win series, and shorten those memories after losses.
