The first time around when the Cubs and Sox met, we both had the same record; that was embarrassing… for the Sox that is. We knew the Cubs were going to suck, but the Sox? I was told they’d win over 130 games. The Sox dispatched of the Cubs, as they should have, beating the Cubs in both games at Wrigley at the start of May. Fast forward to the end of May; surely the Sox have separated themselves from the Cubs by now, right? Well, after the Cubs kicked their ass on Saturday night at the Cell, or the Rate, whatever, the Sox and Cubs are only separated by 3 games… The Sox are actually under 500 now with a 22-23 record; what’s wrong with them?
They showed some stats during the game on Saturday night; looks like the offense is playing way worse than last year, which honestly, is very surprising. On paper, the Sox look to have a loaded lineup; you figure they’d come around eventually. I thought the pitching would be a concern. Seeing the Sox DFA Keuchel before the game was surprising… and funny to me. This was the guy that ran his mouth about the Cubs back in the day, talking about the Astros winning it all (with some sign stealing help of course) and not having a hangover like us… something like that. He never lived up to his big deal with the Sox, and now, they have a clear hole on their roster: a left handed starting pitcher…. yet, they didn’t want to pay for Rodon… things that make you go hmmm… Giolito and Cease have been fine; Kopech has looked good, Lynn will be back soon, and hopefully for the Sox, recover successfully from his injury. But throwing Johnny Cueto out there… straight up junk baller at this point in his career with his 31 different deliveries to home plate… is pretty bad. I know he hadn’t allowed a run before this game, which was shocking, but I hope the Sox don’t think this guy is a long term solution this year… Of course, our memories of Johnny Cueto are very good, including THE memory of Baez hitting a home run off him in Game 1 of the 2016 NLDS, on our way to winning a World Series championship. Don’t worry Sox fans… yours is coming this year, right? Ha!
The Cubs first run of the game came on a little blooper that any defensively average first baseman would have had. Yet, when Abreu turned around to try to run and get the ball, it looked like the first time he was doing so… how pathetic was that? Maybe it wasn’t as pathetic as Grandal not sliding when trying to score for 2nd base on a single; what the hell was that? Don’t want to get dirty Yasmani? It was great to see Tim Anderson turn in an 0-fer… And great to see this overrated, under performing offense in person; are Sox fans worried yet? Or how about their Hall of Fame manager? Why on earth do you leave Cueto in so long this game? It cost the Sox the final 2 runs of the game, as the Cubs coasted to a 5-1 victory. I’ve read here and there about his questionable decisions… I see what they’re talking about. Like I said, are Sox fans concerned?
Zero expectations for us Cubs fans. I’ve used 2016 to erase Bartman, and now, will use the memory to get me through these dog days; I’m sure Sox fans do the same with 2005. Expectations for the Sox this year were/are (?) sky high. To see the Cubs beat them down on their home field whatever it’s called… still feels good. Let’s knock them around again on Sunday. Go Cubs!!!
