May 28, 2019: Overmatched

In the second time in two weeks, the Cubs matched up against another first place team. They visited the Astros in Houston for a 3 game series. In the first two games, the Cubs looked overmatched. I don’t say that much.

This was an Astros team without Altuve, Springer, and Correa. We would even dodge Verlander in this set. Yet, we dropped the first two. It was the starters that let us down. Both Hamels and Lester couldn’t hold their offense in check. It sure seemed like balls were flying out of there, but that was on both sides. The Cubs brought their bats minus KB, and slugged a bunch of homers to no avail.

There’s a couple ways to look at it. This is only a series in May and the only other time we could potentially cross paths with these guys is in the World Series. Or…this was a measuring stick against one of the best teams in the majors not at full strength and the Cubs didn’t measure up. Both statements are true. It is just one series, with no additional ramifications in the standings than any other series. I’m certainly not going to worry about a team we could face in the World Series. If we get there, I don’t care who it is. I’d be much more worried about other teams in our division or even other potential NL teams before I worried about an AL team. Yes, the Astros took it to us; they outplayed us across the board. It’s not the end of the world. It should be a good wake up call. Something that should serve as a reminder to the Cubs that maybe they’re not the hot shit that they or we think they are. You gotta work for this. Yes, the Cubs are a great team, but definitely not alone. And everybody will be bringing their A game against us, regardless of their record (Reds), or the healthy players on the field (Astros). I’m going to take these losses as some much needed medicine.

As for the starters, I’m definitely not panicking. Here’s the thing: if the starters aren’t going to hold up, we don’t even have to worry about the playoffs, let alone a potential World Series opponent. If our five aren’t going to pitch well, this stay in first place will be short lived. If there is any part of the team we have to trust, it’s them. Way too early to worry about them, outside of our fifth starter Darvish of course. Although I think he can hold that spot down…

So back for the final game of the series, one that is already lost…and it’s not the Reds!!! Yet, avoiding the sweep would be nice as we travel to St. Louis to take on the reeling Cardinals. How’d we do? Go Cubs!
