May 27, 2019: The Slimmest of Margins

As action closes on this Memorial Day, the Cubs hang on to the NL Central lead by the slimmest of margins; a half game lead over the Brewers is all we got after losing four of our last five games. It started losing the finale in the Phillies series, yet that still equaled a split. But it was those damn Reds again; the only team to beat us in a series since early April; they’ve done it twice. Now if they can only beat somebody else, they may climb the standings. And today, a loss at the hands of the first place Astros. The roller coaster ride that was so fun has taken a rough turn; this is the 162 game season that is the MLB.

I see a lot of talk about the bullpen; let’s start there. First thing we should all remember is that we are missing both our 8th and 9th inning guys, arguably the two most important pieces of the pen. Strop is on his way back, while Morrow is anyone’s guess. Getting one back will be helpful; getting both back is necessary. Adding another arm to these two is what it may take to party like it’s 2016 again. Calling Craig Kimbrel. I didn’t think it was required, after all, our bullpen has been very good. Outside of the early season stumble, they’ve been reliable. Yet, we all know you can never have enough arms in the pen. Remember 2016? I’m sure you do. Back then I was happy with our closer, Rondon, who we faced in this first game of the Astros series. Yet, the Cubs still went out and added Chapman. Safe to say we’d still be waiting for our first championship in our lifetime without him. I find it a bit similar this year, except our closer isn’t healthy. That makes this move to get Kimbrel even more necessary. Is Kimbrel Chapman? Is he the best available closer out there? Forget about no money supposedly, you’d have to think that Theo will get the best available bullpen arm soon. This is our clear and most obvious need. Have a little faith…and patience.

Any other areas of concern, areas of need? With Yu as our fifth starter, I’m feeling pretty good about the rotation. Yes, they’ve all had their ups and downs, but have to think they’ll be steady, at least for the rest of this year. Next year and beyond? Well, let’s just worry about this year. The offense can always do better with RISP. Plenty of home runs to go around, but hitting in the clutch remains the most important aspect of a clicking offense. Those timely hits, to the opposite field perhaps, are what will carry us; these will take us from good to great to champs. Adding a veteran bat will be helpful, but we have that covered no? Hope all turns out OK with Zorilla; he’ll be welcomed back when he’s ready.

Sure, nobody likes losing streaks, but I’m still solid right now. The Cubs are still doing well, especially for early in the season…although we are almost a third there. Still, better than digging a hole for us to climb out of. Let’s get back at it tomorrow, the beauty of baseball. Go Cubs!
