I think this may be a regular feature going forward. Writing about my coaching tales could be a once a week thing, right? I’m sure you won’t mind if I do.
It is Chicago sports after all. It’s the grass roots of sports in Chicago. For these 4, 5, and 6 olds, it may be that first taste of competitive sports, well as competitive as a league of this age group can be. More than anything, getting the kids to learn the basics, love the game, and have fun would be equivalent to bringing home the title. We’re planting the seeds now.
If you planted at all, you should be experiencing good success, with all the rain we’ve had. All this rain we’re having is causing chaos with our practice schedule. Absolutely pouring on Friday led to another indoor practice where we stuffed 40 kids into a crowded gym. It’s all good. Saturday morning brought beautiful weather our way, but it didn’t matter. The field that we were supposed to practice on still had puddles; back inside we went, getting back to our normal practicing in the rain.
We finally got to hit. I set up the tee, and for the 8 kids in attendance, it was probably their favorite practice. Who doesn’t like to hit? It was a mixed bag of results, with the shots coming off my son’s bat making this coach feel like a proud papa. There were other good shots, and a handful of dribblers. We’ve only just begun.

The fielding was probably the most fun to watch. The other seven kids all chasing that same ground ball. I got a kick out of it, before one of the kids hit his head, and another one, my son, started melting down when he didn’t get the ball. Yep, time to split the field. It worked better after that; only three kids going after each ball. Baby steps.
The big day is next week, with the kickoff parade and season opener. Hopefully we’ll get a chance to take the field on that Friday before. I’d hate for our first time on the field to be for our first game. But either way, we’ll roll with it. Thinking we pickup our uniforms then; again, this first time coach just going with the flow.
It’s a lot of fun. I’m excited to start playing the games, and see where the chips will fall. Couple good hits per game, could good plays on the field, and a couple of wins sounds like a reasonable expectation. Although I did see the championship game on the schedule…how cool would that be? Have to crawl before you walk before you run. Time to start crawling.

Baby steps, baby steps. Coaching young kids is tough, but there are plenty of laughs, too. The listening will be sporadic, but stay the course and progress will be made. Practicing and playing in the rain is tough. Hopefully, this friday should be an outdoor practice so the kids can get dirty. That should be fun. Goodluck with the parade and game 1…time to start the season with a W!
