I really hate all this MJ Lebron talk. That’s the popular subject, especially with Lebron recently passing MJ for most total points in the postseason. For the record, it took him 33 more games to do it, which equates to 5 points per game less, but now I’m falling into this discussion. We’re having the wrong conversation.
The Greatest Player of All Time, or GOAT as it is affectionately known, is Michael Jordan. Fact. Number one is already taken. It is undisputed. There will never be another better. The real conversation should be who the second greatest player of all time is. Now we can start talking.
It’s a much better dispute. It’s unfair to compare everyone to Mike, although that is what we taught these kids. To Be Like Mike was just a catch phrase, but there were kids who took this seriously, and had the talent to give it a good attempt. Kobe and LeBron both wanted to be like Mike; Lebron is still trying. The bar has been set too high. The killer inside him. The perfection in the Finals. The all around game. The will to win. The clutch gene. The iconic Air Jordan. The love of the game. The pioneer of its world popularity. He has accomplished more than anyone can hope to. It’s not their fault.
You can’t blame them. If there’s anybody who you should copy your game after, it’s number two three. The fadeaway. The pre game ritual. The chase down block. All things brought to us by MJ before this latest and maybe greatest imitator. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery they say; MJ should be very flattered.
But he was the master, and these are his students. We’ve seen two of the greatest in Kobe and LBJ since his final retirement. Of course, there were those that showed greatness prior to MJ. There are those epic big men that you can infuse into this conversation. The quest for two conversation that is.

Who is the second greatest player of all time? That’s the real question. Make your arguments. Have some fun with it. But keep MJs name out of your mouth. He is the gold standard; everyone else is ranked AMJ, or After Michael Jordan in case you didn’t get it. LeBron can certainly achieve that before his career is over.
Some say he already has it. Some say Kobe is still above him. What about Magic? Maybe Bird? Yes, that number two argument could be a very well contested one. Being number two is pretty good after all.
But no…we keep seeing the comparison to Jordan, because after all these years, MJ still sells. Whatever it may be…shoes, clothing, or clicks on the Internet, MJ in the mix gives it that extra oomph. The talk of him, and anybody trying to best him, is what sells. But those of us who know, know exactly what this is about.
It’s about the greatest MJ imitator; it’s about the guy who did the best in his career in comparison to MJ. Never better, only how well they can stack up (UP) to him. He has been, and may be topped in certain statistical categories, but never in the GOAT ranking.
So good luck to all competitors and fans. Good luck in attaining that number two ranking; it is very much up for the taking. Just remember that’s the best you get. One is reserved for all time for the one and only. There’s MJ and then there’s everybody else. Who wants to be number two?

I concur. The real argument is for #2 and for that matter, the rest of the top 5 or 10. We know the guys who should be there, but the order can change. Is there really a right or wrong here? Probably not, but there is only 1 GOAT and that is Michael Jordan! The comparisons happen all too often. So many guys being the next MJ. This is fine to do since MJ meant so much to the nba and anyone who ever played bball, but there he is on a level that NOBODY will ever attain. Yes, his records and stats may be broken and passed, but his legacy as the GOAT will remain forever. Enjoy debating 2-10, #1 is locked by #23!
