Earlier this week on Monday, my son had his annual award night, the sports banquet to celebrate the year in sports at his school. It was like $20 a person… I was definitely happy they had plenty of food there; you know I was going to get my money’s worth… haha.
My son participated in 3 of the 4 available sports at his school. Yeah, we can’t get him to do volleyball. It kind of works out though, since during volleyball season, his swim meets really pick up… the kid can only do so much!!! The season started with Cross Country; he did well. I think he finished in 3rd place twice; can’t recall the first race. His team won the overall points trophy in one of those weeks. His classmate won the MVP for the year, while someone else won most improved. My son won the “Eagle Award” which is given to the team member as voted on by the kids, so that was pretty cool. His first medal of the evening locked up.
Next up was basketball; there’s already a lot of hardware stocked up from that season. Their team went undefeated and won the championship of the city/suburban league; it was a great, great season. My son played really well, but he would not defend his MVP medal this year; there were 2 other kids on his team that were deserving… one of them got it. Most improved was given to one of the big kids on the team; that was well deserved too. Drawing a blank on the other award, but… my son was fine. They brought out the championship trophy for the night, and got some more snaps in. It was fun to remember that great run. I actually snuck in an “award” on the evening. I was presented with a t-shirt that said “Stats is my Superpower”… since I’m the unofficial stat keeper for the entire team; that was a very nice surprise.
Finally, track and field… my son won the MVP for that! He was really happy to get his 2nd medal of the evening; he deserved it. When they showed the highlights of the year, one of them was my son passing up a bunch of kids down the stretch in one of his races; he did that a few times during the season. I loved that video, but it doesn’t top the one I have… haha. With full audio thanks to my yelling, I captured him coming in first place for his relay team; he loves that video too. I think he’s watched it like 20x… haha.
It was a very nice evening. My son’s school may be small, but they are mighty, especially his class… and not only the boys. Both the boys and girls from his class kick ass in sports! I think there’s like a whole boys vs girls thing too that makes it even that much better. It’s a lot of fun to see; rooting my son and his team on at the events throughout the year is priceless. Reliving all of my sports playing days through him is awesome, although he does a whole lot more than I did… and he’s better! But I do have to remind him where he gets his jump shot from… haha… no clue where he got his speed from though… haha. Congrats boy!
