May 24, 2020: Going Back

Since we continue to go without live sports, and The Last Dance is over, I need my new fix. Thankfully they’re showing plenty of old sporting events across all the channels we still have on our cable. On this night, I picked up the end of Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. Talk about a heart wrencher. Remember, this was before the Red Sox World Series titles. They were currently on one of the longest droughts, with the Cubs and the White Sox, in the MLB without a title.

We know how this script played out, or at least I thought I did. Of course it was the Buckner game, which for us Cubs fans, can be put in the same category as the Durham game. This was on the biggest stage, but I didn’t know some things about this game. First off, the game was already tied when it happened. The Red Sox had already blown the 2 run lead, so even if Buckner does make that play, it’s still not over. Plus, even after Buckner made the error, and the Red Sox lost the game, the World Series wasn’t over yet; it was only Game 6. Buckner gets all the blame of course, but when you consider the couple facts about it, I think it may be a bit unfair.

Another thing lost in the shuffle because of this was not only how big a series Marty Barrett had, but what about Dave Henderson? I remember him hitting that game winning home run in the ALCS to get them here. He hit a home run in the top of the 10th inning of THIS game! We would have been one of the ultimate heroes of all time… but nope.

Up 2 runs, 2 outs, 1 strike away from winning the World Series; that’s when the wheels fell off. After waiting so many years, getting so close, then to see this happen… ouch. It doesn’t get worse than that. Seeing it happen to the Rangers years later against of all teams the Cardinals, that was painful too. Of course we can relate to that pain. I already mentioned the Durham game, but the more famous one is the Bartman game. It had its similarities.

When the Bartman play happened, the Cubs still held the lead, right? It wasn’t until Alex Gonzalez with an awesome fielding percentage made an error on a tailor made double play… and then the bullpen put it out of reach. It was Game 6 too; still had our chance to win Game 7. Yet after we blew Game 6, that sinking feeling had sunk all the way in, and although Kerry hit that blast to give us that hope one more time, it was soon back in the gutter. Of course, the only way I can easily talk about this is because of 2016. It’s still not fun to remember this time, but it’s not nearly as painful.

I imagine the same for Red Sox fans. At that moment though… man, the pain. The Cubs of course was in the NLCS. The Red Sox being that close to winning the World Series… I can’t think of a worse heartbreak than that; the Rangers shared in that same level.

Yes, I have resorted to going back again to get my sports fix. My original date of June 1st where I thought we’d see the return of sports will come and go, and we still wait. We have heard some encouraging news about at least one sport. Let’s cheer ourselves up a bit and talk about that next.
