Who’s ready for this exciting Cubs Reds series this week? At a combined 24 games under 500 on the 23rd of May, taking up the bottom 2 spots in the NL Central Division, this is some real edge of my seat type shit. But hey, it is the Cubs, right? Right.
Did you see how empty it was in Cincinnati on Monday night? Not even the Cubs fans can save the Reds from their pitiful attendance, but do you blame Reds’ fans? Talk about tanking, the Reds just didn’t give a crap; I’m shocked they still have Joey Votto and Luis Castillo to be honest with you. But they will be traded by the deadline, just like Willson and maybe Kyle; the Cubs and the Reds have a lot in common this year. Let the fight for the best draft pick commence!
You see, the Cubs already screwed that up by beating the Reds in the series opener. If they would have lost 4 straight games, they would have tied the Reds at the bottom of the division, which in this case, is the very bottom of major league baseball. I’m sure Jed will try to fix that right up, a la Major League, taking the hot water out of the Cubs locker room, forcing them to fly in some little propeller plane to their next stop on the road. Nah, that’s just movie stuff, right? Yeah, we’re living in the real world, and what Jed needs to do is quickly escalate the moving of Willson Contreras; it only makes sense.
I don’t care how good or bad Rizzo, Bryant, and Baez are doing; throw in Schwarber, Darvish, Castellanos, and Kimbrel for that matter. Fact is, the Cubs never brought in any top tier talent to replace any of these guys, apologies to Suzuki and Stroman; nothing wrong with those guys, just not top tier, like Freddie Freeman or Carlos Correa would have been. The Cubs are not fielding a team that correlates to the money they have to spend. The Cubs chose to save money, and field an extremely average team; just like the Reds, although the Reds don’t have nearly enough money as the Cubs do. So what’s worse?
Sure, the Cubs will have some good moments during the season, like beating up on the handful of teams that are worse than us; every team has some good moments in 162 right? Yet, at the end of the day, please don’t get your hopes up; things will get worse before they get better. Get ready to get pissed off all over again; I’m still not over last year, so just pile it on honestly… the wound hasn’t healed. But tell me again how great the Cubs farm system is… that really cheers me up… yawn. When will we start to see those guys? How many of them will actually pan out? How many more of these “maybes” will we add before the deadline? Fun stuff, but we’re Cubs fans; we can take it… and like always, Go Cubs!?! Yeah, go Cubs…
