May 23, 2018: Loser Goes Home

Pushing it to the limit.  The point of no return.  One and done.  Loser goes home.  All different ways to describe what some say is the best game in all of sports.  Of course it’s Game 7 I refer to.

No possible Game 7s in football, but in every other major professional sport, we may be treated to one.  Need I mention the 2016 World Series???  Yes, that was a treat.  But it could have been, and was for Cleveland fans, the worst of devastation.  It’s all or nothing.  Wednesday May 23rd brought us one.

It was the Capitals and Lightning for the right to advance to the Stanley Cup Finals.  Obviously, the later in the playoffs it is, the better the Game 7s get.  With Vegas already dispatching of Winnipeg, it was between Washington and Tampa Bay to complete the other side of the bracket.

When the Caps jumped out to a 2-0 series lead, winning both games in Tampa Bay, I thought it was over.  But then when Tampa came back and won 2 in Washington, and then another in Tampa to take a 3-2 series lead, I thought it was over the other way.  Washington crumbles again; the wait for their first Cup will continue.  But… then they tied it up.  And then they won Game 7.  I didn’t really care who won, and I really didn’t get to see much of the game.  I knew that either way, I’d be rooting for the Western Conference champs, who were the Vegas Golden Knights.

There’s been a lot of talk about them.  I get it.  My first reaction was to root against them, because their fan base has never had to deal with the struggle; they do not know the agony of defeat.  But then again, what DO they know?  Were there really all these hockey fans sitting in the desert?  Um, no.  But by putting a professional team in Vegas, they grabbed all sports fans residing there.  I’m sure there were even Blackhawks fans that lived out in Vegas that now support the Knights.  That’s OK.  Root for the team from your city, that’s cool.  So anyways.. I got over that, mainly because of the team and its makeup.  All these guys who were given away by their teams…  playing with that chip on their shoulder all year.  They play hard… each and every line… each and every minute of each period.  How can you hate that?

All I know is I wish I would have thrown $20 on them to win the Cup before the season started.  500 to 1???  That’s 10 grand man.  That would have bankrolled a couple trips to Vegas.  Who am I kidding?  That would have helped pay my son’s tuition for a couple years…

Yeah, woulda coulda…  And as the Cup matchup was finalized, I peeked at the series odds.  This underdog team is finally the favorite!  Yeah, I like them either way.  Washington may be more talented on paper, but so was every other team.  Sometimes talent doesn’t guarantee victory; it’s a little something we like to call heart.  How can you root against a team that plays and wins with heart?  I can’t.  Go Vegas.
