May 22, 2019: Cup Choice

As the Blues were advancing to the Stanley Cup finals, my brother texted me: F’n horrible NHL final. You see, they will be playing the Bruins for the Cup. If you recall the teams I wouldn’t mind seeing win, these two were among the teams that I would least like to see win. On the surface, it certainly seems like a no-win situation, but I’m going to break it down, and get to my Cup choice.

Look, it’s not like the Blues are the Cardinals. By association, that’s one of the reasons I hate them; not their fault, just playing in the wrong city. Sure, they are a rival of the Hawks; one of the worst? We’ve met 11 times in the playoffs, but we lead that series 7-4. I’m sure most remember the 2016 seven game classic where we came out on the wrong end; I’m sure that has helped keep that hate burning. But really, why should we hate them? We’ve won 3 Cups this decade, 6 all time. The Blues? Zip, zero, nada. Remember the Seabs hit on Backes? Wakey, Wakey said Keith. Any way you cut it, we’ve held the upper hand. I’m sure their hate for us is more than our hate for them; that happens when a rivalry is one sided. Six Cups to zip qualifies. And being that the Blues have never won, they fall into that category of teams that I like to root for. Being a Cubs fan, waiting my whole life to see it. Heck, even Sox fans…most waited their life to see one too. That quest to raise their first should be something I can get behind.

Look, it’s not like the Bruins are the Patriots. By association, that’s one of the reasons I hate them. Not just the Pats either, but the overall success of Boston teams. Thank God the Celtics lost…because if the Bruins win, Boston will hold 3 of the 4 major sports titles. That’s just crazy! Awesome for Boston…something for me to be very jealous of… a reason for me to hate every sports team from that city. Could you imagine if we had 3 of the 4 major sports titles? We’d be going nuts. I should embrace that, but nah. Time to be a big time hater. They’re an original six team just like us, and although they hold the playoff edge over us 5-2 all time, the only one we care about is the only Stanley Cup matchup in 2015. 17 seconds anyone? They may have the most annoying player in the league; that doesn’t help. But surely I have to ride with our non-rival here right?

As a Blackhawk fan, seeing three Cups this decade, leading the Blues in postseason match ups, seeing the Blues with ZERO Cups all time, I think of Tony Montana and his response to the line “you can’t shoot a cop”. You can’t root for a rival… Whoever said you was one? Not feeling that hate burn for the Blues as much as I thought. Feeling much more hate for Boston and their constant winning. So there’s my Cup choice. Rooting for the lesser of two evils, I’d rather see the Blues win. I’d rather see the Hawks win, but that’s not a choice now is it. I probably won’t watch much anyways…
