Since we’re on the topic of the Blackhawks, before we get back to some baseball, let’s turn the page on this 2016-2017 season. Maybe you already have…
It was a hard pill to swallow; there’s no doubt about that. Another first round exit, this time by virtue of a dominating sweep, left a lot of us upset…surprised, shocked, yes, but definitely mad. I think that was that feeling in the organization too. A feeling that this was going to lead to some change…and it did. Kitchen fired, minor league coach fired, Darling traded. I think we all believe there is more to come.
Panik will be back. The first move to keep this team together was done a couple weeks ago now. I’m ok with that. He did disappear in the playoffs, but that was no different than most of them. A breakout season to say the least, will hopefully be followed up by a solid encore topped with some playoff brilliance. Not asking for too much.
The trade of Darling eliminated one of my offseason ideas. Trading Crow for a big, young, fast name, and signing Darling for half the cost, was just one of my out of the box ideas. Nothing against Crow; it was business, nothing personal. Crow is an elite goalie; I don’t think the past two years have changed that opinion of him. So, we know the plan in goal…and I’m pretty good with it.
Another idea would be for Hossa to restructure his deal. At 38, with 4 years left at 5.2M, I don’t know what other options we have there. Love Hossa, don’t get me wrong. Maybe spreading that out over the next 12 years? That would make for a pretty nice retirement package for big Hoss, and free up some much needed cap space for the Hawks. There are some other big salaries.

The defense is probably the biggest area of focus. Seabrook at 32 and at 6.8M for the next 7 years seems like a bad deal. He’s been a popular name to be moved, but who would take that deal? Another restructure? Keith at 33 and at 5.5M for the next 6 years isn’t much better. He’s much better than Seabs, but still a lot of money for a lot of years. Not sure what can be done here. Hammer at 4.1 for the next couple isn’t bad in my opinion. I wonder why that Daley kid didn’t work out; he sure seems to be doing ok with the Pens.
The Hawks do have a lot of young talent. I thought that mix of core guys with the young guns would lead to a deep run. I think I still do. You know how sometimes you’re a year early. Maybe we need another year of these groups gelling and clicking to make that deep run. I’m not sure what other options we have here.
I’m not so sure we need to do anything drastic. After letting the initial anger cool down, and seeing how the Preds advanced through the rest of the West, maybe it was just not meant to be this year. Maybe we’re a year away.
Sorry they’re not more exciting…my ideas that is. I really do still believe in this team. I really don’t see that many other options. I know the bar for this franchise has been set higher than ever, and that deep runs are expected not hoped for; I wouldn’t trade that position for anything. And with 3 Cups this decade, I wouldn’t trade positions with any team. The Hawks are still positioned for success. Now that we’ve had some time, maybe you can see that too. Maybe you have other ideas. Maybe we should continue to trust in Stan and Q. Looking forward to next year, and the chance to prove I was right with that “year off theory”. Go Hawks!

Page has been turned on the Bhawks, but their exit was upsetting, shocking, and disappointing. Darling getting traded made sense I guess. Crow is locked in and one of the best. Panik sticking around is fine. I agree that more moves are coming. One I would like to see is moving Seabs. I like the guy. He is a solid defender with a heavy shot, but he is getting older and making a lot of money. The Bhawks need to get younger and faster on the back end. Plus, I think they need someone with net front presence. Other than that, no need to overthink things. Hoss restructuring would be nice given his age and contract. The core is together. Trust in stan and Q and get ready to come back hungry next season. GO HAWKS!!!
