Well, it’s not exactly a hole yet… but the Hawks are now down in the series 2-1 after last night’s 2-1 loss to the Ducks.
It wasn’t pretty. It was the Hawks first home playoff loss of the year. The Ducks outplayed us, as mentioned by some commenters already. Was it that simple? Why now? Is this just the Hawks making it interesting, or are we in real trouble in this series?
The power play struggled. That’s always been one thing I could never understand about this Hawks team… the power play struggles. You would think, with the amount of skill and depth on this team, that the power play would be ranked towards the top of the league every year. That has never really been the case. They were good recently in the postseason, going 4 for 11 in recent games… but it went south on this Thursday night in the UC. Then, to top it off, Hossa took a penalty that negated our power play, and gave them a minute of power play time… which of course they cashed in on. Taking advantage of your opportunities seems to be a theme here…
One thing I was kind of surprised about was the change in the lineup. I’ll admit, Game 3 was the first game I watched from beginning to end, but to scratch Teuvo and Vermette in exchange for Versteeg and Nordstrom was a little odd. Everything I’ve seen from Teuvo seems positive. Yes, he is undersized, but his speed and skill is tremendous. Vermette hasn’t done that much, but his presence at the dot is pretty important. And more importantly, as I listened to the Score driving in to work this morning, the changes impacted two lines. The original 4th line of Shaw, Kruger, and Desjardins had been playing pretty good. That was not the case in this game, because of the changes. I didn’t see much positives from either of the two new entrants to the series either.

I guess I’m fully committed now… that is, to watching every game from here on out from front to end. It’s funny how spoiled we get… I remember even during the Bulls glory days, Game 1 and 2 weren’t really that urgent… meaning, it wasn’t necessarily can’t miss TV like it should be. I’m not sure if I’m alone here, but this is the effect of being spoiled… getting used to playing in the playoffs every year. Been there done that… Now, being down 2-1, and entering Game 4 on Saturday night, it IS must watch TV.
I still have faith, but last year starts creeping in my head… going down 3-1 in this series would truly be digging a hole. I don’t think I want to relive that, let alone, I don’t think we’d be able to come back. I’ve always believed in the Hawks, regardless of down 3-0, 3-1… it doesn’t matter. Until they lose, I’ll still be confident in them. With the loss to the Kings most recent in my memory, I start to feel a little fear. I’m starting to feel a little bit worried. Win Saturday night, OK. Lose Saturday night… uhoh.
That’s what it’s all about though isn’t it? It’s the rollercoaster ride that our teams put us through. It’s the adventure, the journey, the uncertainty. That’s what makes winning so great. It just wouldn’t be the same to run over every team, now would it? I wouldn’t have it any other way, except for one thing…. the end result. I always want my teams to WIN; I don’t think I’m alone there. It’s not quite MUST win territory, but it’s pretty damn close. Saturday night is coming… buckle up Hawks fans.
