May 21, 2023: Beautiful Day for Baseball

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 0

Finally… this Sunday we actually had a beautiful day for baseball. After getting rained out our first two games, and dealing with rain and/or cold the next four, our fifth game was ideal baseball weather; I want to play games with this weather from here on out. It was absolutely gorgeous on Sunday afternoon in Chicago.

Saturday was pretty nice too, but our game started at 845am, so… it was still a bit chilly. Our kids were half awake for that one. My son was out late the night before on an outing with his classmates. Had a kid walk in the dugout with a Starbucks cup; another show up right before the first pitch, saying he just woke up. These are 11-12 year old kids mind you… not like a 21+ year old group that went on a bender the night before… haha. We lost the game on Saturday 7-4. Afterwards, I told them we’re going to have to put in a curfew for the night before our next early game; we all laughed.

Sunday was a 1pm start; no excuses for this one. Well, speaking of excuses… we are dealing with injuries; I feel like a major league baseball team right now… haha. The best kid on our team, the 5’10” 12 year old fractured his finger playing travel ball; he’s out indefinitely. One of the next best kids on our team was out all weekend due to slicing part of his knuckle off in a cooking accident; I can’t make this up. Another really good kid had a basketball game/tourney on Sunday. Finally, another one of the kids took a fall Sunday morning, and wasn’t available, so yeah, we were short handed, playing with the other 9 kids on our roster. It didn’t matter though… we played a great game and ended up winning by a score of 9-6.

It was a bunch of our 11 year olds who had some big hits in this one. My son, after striking out with the bases loaded in the first inning, came up in that same situation in the 3rd inning; this time, he singled to center on the first pitch. Another one of our youngsters hit a blast in the right center field gap; it was certainly his best hit of the year. Finally, with 2 outs and the bases loaded, up 6-4, our kid hit a blast over the left fielder’s head clearing the bases. We hit the ball on Sunday, only striking out looking once the whole game. It’s great to see the kids get up there and hit the ball. Not only did they all say that is the most fun part of baseball, it’s the thing that I love the most. Heck, even making a nice play in the field. Any time one of our kids does something great, maybe surprising themselves even, I really enjoy it. Seeing our kid hit that bases clearing double… he was hyped up; we all were. I know my son is having a lot of fun, but I do question who is having more fun… me or him… haha. It’s always fun winning too.

So, back to the practice field; need some work on baserunning, rundowns, and tagging. Happy with our 2-3 record thus far; hoping to continue to get better as the season progresses. These are the days…
