May 21, 2016: Keeping Up

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 1

The night after Sale ran his record to 9-0, it was Jake’s turn to take the hill.  We was looking to go 8-0.

We did a little bit of running around on Friday, which was OK, especially since the Cubs game was on late.  We stopped at Andy’s Custard, which was pretty good.  We also stopped at Bed, Bath, and Beyond; OK, I’m starting to sound like Frank the Tank.  This is the life we chose.  No worries though… 9pm came, and the radio was turned to 670AM for Pat & Ron to get us home.  Sidenote:  I don’t even know what radio station the Sox are on nowadays.  It’s not like I wouldn’t turn them on too, but their announcers on the radio are so brutal, I didn’t even bother to find out where their games are broadcast now.  I’ve been over this before.

Back to Friday night, driving home, listening to the start of the game… and hearing the description of Heyward crashing into the wall.  Oh. no.  Not again.  Injuries are concerning.  We’ve already had one major one with the loss of Schwarby…. and now Heyward goes down?!?!  That Cubs outfield is hazardous for your health.  I know Heyward hasn’t been the best hitter so far, definitely not living up to his big money deal, which should call for a drop in the lineup, but losing him would still hurt.  That would mean 2 starters lost for the year; I was already thinking the worst.  My wife looked at me, and said… oh boy, here we go again.  Not with the tone of concern, but with the tone of… get over it.  She remembers the day Schwarby was announced out for the year, and the effect that had on me.  I just hope this news is better.

And since I’m a couple days behind, we all know the news WAS better.  Whew!  The X-ray was negative, but that didn’t mean anything.  Not until after the MRI came in clean, did we realized that a bullet was dodged.  Maybe this flash with serious injury will help kick start Heyward; we definitely need the offense.

But we didn’t that night.  After all, it was Jake on the mound, and just like Sale, we’re looking for one run.  We got a little more than that against the other Jake.  Pat had reminded me that this was a match up of 2 former Cy Youngs; now it was a match up of a guy at the top of his game vs a guy that should be put out to pasture.  Peavy got rocked.  Bryant’s 3 run bomb was the knockout blow, and that was more than enough to get that W, and push Jake’s record to 8-0.

Keeping up with Sale is what he did.  Now 17-0 among the two of them, Chicago is definitely lucky.  To have maybe the 2 best pitchers in the majors right here in our city.  Yes, that is a blessing.  Speaking about keeping up… the Sox had been doing a pretty good job of that, but now they have faded into the background as well, leaving the Cubs alone at the top of the majors.  Although 2 more games in San Fran remained, which would serve as a reminder, that it’s a long season… and the Giants are pretty damn good too.  They have their own top pitcher that can be thrown in that conversation of best in MadBum; we would see him Sunday night… he did his best impression of Chris and Jake.  Let’s get caught up with the weekend next.

Did I just say that sale was the best pitcher in the bigs? What I meant was that Jake is the best pitcher in the bigs! HAHAHA
What a duo these two would be on the same squad…WOW!
Jake continues his dominance from last year after many, myself included, thought he might not be as good. Looks like that couldnt be further from the truth. He just rolls along right where he left off last year. He really is awesome right now and has the numbers to prove it.
Arrieta vs Sale crosstown classic…who wouldnt want to see that?
