May 21, 2015: The UC

Back at the UC for Game 3 tonight vs the Ducks.  It’s nice to be home.

It’s been 18 days since the Blackhawks last game at the United Center.  Fans have been waiting for this next playoff game for too long.

It started this morning, when my brother showed up to work with his Blackhawks jersey on; I saw plenty of that today.  As I headed out of downtown, it was too crowded to jump on the Kennedy, so I took Madison straight down.  Hawks fans were out early… saw a Hammer jersey, a Toews jersey, Saad, Kane… the list went on.  The early drinks were flowing as the pregame festivities were in full swing.  All the bars in the West Loop were hopping.  As I made my way past Ashland, there were already Hawks fans flocking to the gates.  It was only 5pm…

More Hawks fans on Western Avenue and at the Metra station off Grand and Western.  It turned out to be a pretty nice day today, so jerseys and t-shirts were both OK to wear.  Will the Hawks reward all the fans and get that big W tonight?

They are undefeated at home in these playoffs at 5-0.  Speaking of 5-0, Sox are already down to the Indians big early.  Good old Johnny Danks on the hill…

So 7pm hits, and we enter the UC to find the A team back in the booth.  Thankfully, Doc and Eddie are broadcasting; it has been brutal without them.  Nothing can beat Foley and Eddie, but Doc’s not bad himself, and having Eddie there makes it feel like a home broadcast.  Now time for the anthem…  Both my son and I raise our right hands to our temples, and as “the flag was still there” hits, we extend our right hands.  It’s time for the puck drop.

The first period started pretty good; we got a few early powerplays but were not able to convert.  The Ducks DID convert on theirs, and went up 1-0.  Then we got another PP, this time for a double minor highsticking… nothing, absolutely nothing.  It looked like this game was going to be 1-0 heading into the break, before Patrick Kane scored an absolutely beautiful goal.  After taking a rocket pass from Richards off his skates, Kane corralled it in traffic, got it on his backhand, and flipped it over the goalie’s right shoulder.  1-1 Hawks.  Almost 2-1 Hawks after Saad just missed off a nifty pass from Keith.

This is where I left off… My son was calling for Blaze or Paw Patrol… so he gets his wish at the intermission, and I get a chance to knock out today’s blog.  So 1-1 after 20…  The in game blog worked last time, so we’re sticking to it.  2nd period is about to begin…  Go Hawks!

q has to change the d strategy. dump and chase vs carry it in all the way to the net. who do you suppose will win that in the long run. d has to figure out that they cannot just send it along the boards…….always the other guy waiting for it!!! again, how does that happen…over and over and over, etc?
another good game so far, gotta score to win. novel concept!

You are so right. Ducks were the receiver of about 80% of those dumps. Good things Toews crushed Getzlaf on face offs yesterday or it could have been ugly. On to the next game!

they were just outplayed and outcoached. another game where the team that wanted it more got it. both teams had to be tired, but only the hawks looked like it. power play really has to learn to shoot the puck instead of passing it 6 times before they losing it. quit trying to clear the zone by blindly throwing it up the boards……there’s always a duck there to keep it in and create another scoring opportunity. have to quit relying on crawford to throw a shut-out. change the d stratagy and SHOOT THE F’N PUCK.
