May 20, 2021: It Was a Very Good Year

When I was 21, it was a very good year… Back to the Baseball Seasons review, jumping in the time machine, next stop… 1997. Man, feels like another lifetime ago… Turning 21 meant my first Las Vegas trip; it was a memorable one… aren’t they all? But the first one… you always remember the first one, kind of like the team who won it all that year, the Florida Marlins. Back then I didn’t realize how much I would eventually hate that team. Back then, they were just another expansion team, winning it all, their first, in only their 5th year, while their opponent, the Cleveland Indians continued to suffer, then decades without one, now even more; I could relate. Although beating the Indians in the World Series means I guess we have something in common with the Marlins?

The Braves were back in the playoffs, again, as they were the entire decade of the 90s, but just like every other year except one, they’d come up short. Still can’t believe that team only won 1 World Series. The pitching they had… shit, the hitting they had! They were absolutely stacked when you look back at it, and then to be lead by one of the great managers Bobby Cox. The Yankees beat them the year before in 1996; I remember that series. The Braves had taken a 2-0 lead before blowing it; hey, it’s not worse than blowing a 3-1 lead right?

The year in baseball 1997 started off with the retiring of #42 across the entire majors; I support the move. Reading about Jackie Robinson when I was a kid, knowing a lot more about it now then I did then, it is very deserving. It would be deserving just for everything he had to go through, let alone the fact that he was a pretty damn good baseball player. I think about Michael Jordan in the NBA. He did not go through anywhere near the crap that Jackie did, that’s for sure, but when it comes to greatness… there is no comparison; retiring 23 across all NBA teams would make sense, although then how can the kids really “be like Mike”?

1997 also brought the first year of interleague play; I liked that decision as well. How many Cubs Sox games I’ve went to over the years… a handful; can’t believe I didn’t get in any fights. This is why I won’t go to those games any more, although there’s definitely some extra juice in those matchups. The Subway Series with the Yankees and Mets… the “freeway series” in LA with the Dodgers and Angels… the battle of the Bay with the Giants and As. Interleague play brought us a whole new batch of eye candy… seeing teams play each other that we never saw before, while giving fans of those teams another stadium to visit, watching your team do battle. I’m glad it’s still around today.

But back to the Series… did you realize the Indians were up by 1 run heading to the bottom of the 9th in Game 7? I didn’t recall that, but wow… 3 outs away… tough, tough way to lose. The Marlins would tie the game in the 9th, and then win it in extras. Of course I remember the famous Renteria walk off single to give the Marlins and their “fans” a title… before of course selling off half the club. Anyways… this one didn’t hurt me like the 2nd time the Marlins won the World Series. But back to Vegas… oh yeah, a month from today I will make my way back to the desert; first flight since the pandemic. Can’t fricking wait… Before then though, have 5 more of these Baseball Seasons episodes to watch before we close the book on this feature, although maybe I go back and fill in the blanks watching other videos? Maybe. For now, I hear there’s a series between the first and second place teams in the NL Central taking place in St. Louis this weekend… talk about hate and extra juice…
