Nice series by the Cubs this weekend. Taking 3 out of 4 is nice regardless of who you’re playing. The Reds had been pretty hot coming in…
The weekend before they had swept 4 from the Dodgers in LA for the first time since 1976; that was a good year. Now, coming back home, would they be able to do the same to the Cubs?
How bad have the Dodgers been this year? With Seager out for the year, and Kershaw currently on the DL, and the DBacks hot start, winning the division and making the playoffs may be a tough bet. Of course, nothing is sewn up by anybody yet, including the Cubs.
Even with the 3 out of 4 wins, the Cubs still sit 1.5 games out of first. They are tied with the Cardinals and Pirates, and trail the Brewers, in the tightly packed NL Central. I can’t see the Pirates keeping it up, and although the Cardinals are always in it, they will surely fade, right? If so, that leaves the Brewers. They’ve been really good when not playing the Cubs. Still many more games on the menu with the Brew Crew; regardless, don’t think they’ll keep this up either.
The fact that the Cubs are off to a relatively good start this year, and are not digging themselves a hole, makes me feel good about the long term prospects. Winning games against teams that we should beat is a good place to start.

They did that against Florida, against the White Sox, and now, against the Reds. Piling up those wins against bad teams, eh? Hey, you have to win whatever games are on your schedule OK. Anyways, so that’s exactly what the Cubs did this weekend.
It was a fun series. Good pitching performance by rainy Jon Lester, who can’t seem to get away from the rain in his starts, Jose Quintana, whose recent struggles have Cubs fans regretting the trade (not me), and Yu Darvish, I don’t need to go into his issues do I?
Yes, there was some excitement with an almost brawl too. Funny enough, that would have been the game we would have been at, had the original one not got rained out, and if I hadn’t sold the rescheduled game tickets. Anyways, I understand yelling on the mound, being pumped up after you strike somebody out. But, if you’re doing all this, and you keep staring down the batter… yeah, I think that’s a bit too much. So Javy took exception to it, and was immediately backed up my unofficial team captain Anthony Rizzo. He had a couple big hits too.
Of course, to touch on the negative of this series, you have to look at the Hendricks game. I thought he was fine. The guy I want to scapegoat this on is Justin Wilson. I don’t understand why people can’t throw strikes. Yes, he got himself into the mess, and it was pretty low odds that we were going to escape without giving up a run there, but to walk a guy in… after the defense has been completely overhauled in an attempt to preserve the tie, just pissed me the hell off. What gives with this dude?
Anyways, overall I was very happy with the weekend. The Cubs were busy getting the Red out. and that they did. Now back to Chicago to play the Indians, after an off day Monday. Rest up and Go Cubs!
