I never liked Duke. Not sure why…Coach K is from Chicago. I was called Laettner by a few of my teammates when I hit a game winning shot. I guess it’s just because they win too much, and my hater reflex kicks in. They do get all the calls too. Anyways, this isn’t about that Coach K.
I’ve been known by this name at times. Yes, I did coach…my Madden team. We had many a battles with that game. We’d play almost every night for a while there. It would culminate in the Madden Bowl each year. I did lead my team to one Madden title; finally stood sober enough to not call the same play over and over. Those were some good times. I could dedicate a whole blog to that subject, and I will…eventually, but that’s not what this is about.
My dad was our coach for many years growing up. I guess he was the original Coach K, except he didn’t go by that name; neither will I, at least not at first.
Yes, my coaching career will be kicked off in a couple weeks. I wasn’t planning on it, but I guess when you volunteer to help out in a 4-6 year old league, you become a coach. So I am. I’m actually pretty excited.
I’ve never done this before. What the heck should I do out there? I’m going to have to use all my years of playing to help. I’ll have to remember all the instruction I received growing up, from my backyard, to the Boys Club, to Harrison Park. I’ll have to use what I saw last year in my son’s Lil Sluggers instructional camp. It’ll all come together.

I taught them to run the bases, to catch ground balls, and to point-step-throw. I try to get them to remember each other’s names, to do the 1-2-3 Go Cubs chant, and most importantly and most challenging, to listen. Yes, we are the Cubs by the way; that worked out.
The first two official practices this weekend were held indoors due to the weather. Hopefully we’ll be able to get on the field next week, the last week before the season begins. I’d like to see how all these kids can hit. I know my son needs to get some ABs off the tee in.
All I can hope for is to teach them some sort of love of the game. I want them to have fun. I hope they’ll know the very basics at the end of this season. The wins and losses aren’t that important at this point…wait a second, did I just say that? Yes I did. The other coaches seem a bit competitive…we’ll see how it goes. Maybe I need to include the take out slide in this week’s practice. Haha…
I may actually do a little research this week, to come up with something new to teach the kids. My son is doing good too by the way. He said he wanted to help me coach, and I told him the biggest help he can be is to listen to me…so that maybe all these other kids will. I know I’m asking a lot.
But that’s me now…the first time coach. It’s a whole new world. I’m ready to roll, and I’m glad when I say Go Cubs, that it will not only apply to my team, but to MY team. Go Cubs!

way to go. at this point, the best thing for you to do, is concentrate on the basics. 4-6 year olds don’t need a lot of ‘coaching’. what they need it someone to make sure they have a good foundation of the ‘basics’ going forward. that’s what you start with, and that’s what you lay down to build on going on forward.

Coaching is not easy. Getting little kids to listen and pay attention is even harder. At the end of the day, build the basic blocks to establish the foundation. Hitting, running, throwing, and catching. With each practice, you will find things that you like and dont like. At the end of the day, it is about the kids having fun. Being competitive and wanting to win is a given, though. Losing and getting destroyed is not fun, even for little kids, or coaches like me…hahaha. Goodluck with the coaching, you have the knowledge and prior experience behind you, not to mention being great with kids. Keep it fun and they will listen…mostly. GO CUBS GO!!!
