May 20, 2014: One Love

This is the guy I want.  Forget Carmelo.  This is the guy that the Bulls should go after.  Do it now GarPax… don’t wait.  We already know he will NOT resign in Minnesota.  We got the pieces, more than enough pieces, to trade to get him.  This will be the piece that pushes us over the top.  This will make us contenders for years to come.  No excuses.  Let’s make this happen and bring Kevin Love to the Bulls.

We knew he wasn’t going to stay in Minnesota.  I thought the Lakers were first on his list.  He’s from the West Coast, and played at UCLA.  I just think the Lakers right now are in shambles.  He goes there and makes them a playoff team… maybe.  Supposedly he’s interested in Golden State.  Again, another team from the West Coast, but this time, he could be the piece that puts them over the edge.  With new coach Steve Kerr, the San Francisco (not yet) Warriors would be a top contender with this addition.  They already have a superstar in Curry and a pretty solid fan base.  I couldn’t hate him for going there, but that’s NOT the best place for him.

Coming to Chicago is the ideal fit for you Kevin.  Let me tell you why.  We have the best coach in the NBA.   We have the best TEAM in the NBA.  Yes, I know that’s a big statement, and I know we haven’t won any titles recently, but these guys play together.  They play basketball how it was meant to be played, as a team.  They’re unselfish with the basketball, and they play defense like no other.  This team is ALL heart.  With your addition, and the return of our homegrown superstar, we WILL be able to reach the top of the mountain.  The Chicago Bulls are rich in tradition.  I’m sure you’ve heard of Michael Jordan, and the team that ruled the 90s.  You’ll play in a world class city.  Chicago has THE best fans in the world.  Plus if you come to Chicago, it will make one season ticket holder very happy… me.

OK, let’s figure out how we have to make this happen GarPax.  Let’s start with who we don’t trade for him:  Rose, Noah, Butler, and Gibson.  Let’s talk about who we can trade for him:  Boozer, Mirotic, and two 1st round draft picks this year.  Will it take 3 of the 4?  Maybe all 4.  Who cares?  I do it.  We would avoid amnesty with Boozer.  We would trade the truly unknown commodity that is Mirotic.  Yes, I know this draft is deep, but at 16 & 19 will we get an impact player NOW?  We would be getting a legitimate NBA superstar AND we would keep our core intact… I see no reason why to at least propose this.

So the starting five for the Bulls would look like this:  Rose, Butler, Love, Gibson, and Noah.  I’m happy with that.  Let’s look at the bench.  We keep Augustin.  I think he said he would give us a discount to stay in Chicago.  We bring back Hinrich at the veteran minimum.  We still have Tony Snell.  We keep Jimmer.  We also have Dunleavy returning, let’s not forget that.  This does leave us without some frontcourt depth.  Maybe we keep Taj as the first guy off the bench, and start Dunleavy?  That would make more sense.

I don’t think the Bulls NEED to add another superstar, but if the right guy comes along, why not?  This move makes sense on a whole ‘nother level too: an insurance policy for Rose.  By avoiding amnesty with Boozer, we still can use it… if Rose gets hurt again, this can be a way out.  I know it’s blasphemy to speak these words.  I love Rose, and hope he stays healthy and leads us to many a titles.  But… you always to have a plan B.  By adding Love that gives us another superstar to “replace” Rose if he gets hurt.  Finally, we keep DJ, because he can be a pretty serviceable PG in this worst-case scenario.  So, if Rose stays healthy we have a team that can win for years; if Rose goes down again, we have a better team than we had the last couple years without him, and still remain a top level team.

The time to make this move is now.  With the draft less than a month away, and with Love in his final year of his contract with Minnesota, let’s strike now.  There is of course the matter of re-signing Kevin Love, which of course would be “negotiated” prior to the deal being put through.  AND, I know the owner of the Wolves said they would not trade him before the draft, but if we offer him all 4 pieces as discussed above, that has to be tempting.  I’ll get my hopes up with this potential move as I do with all potential moves for my teams.  Most of the time, it doesn’t happen… let’s change that, and make the HUGE deal that will bring Kevin Love to the Bulls.  Now!

Any trade for Love will need Butler and Gibson involved….they won’t give him away, regardless of his eminent FA departure. Maybe we only lose one, but I doubt it….

I don’t necessarily agree with that: maybe Butler OR Gibson. I don’t think giving them two 1st round picks, a Euro star, and a player who can give you 15 and 10 on some nights is anything to sneeze at. Like you said, he will be leaving at the end of next year, and they’ll get nothing. They’ll need to make a move at some point… let’s give them something to think about. Worst case, I guess I’d trade Jimmy before Taj… we shouldn’t have to give up either though. I think the 4 pieces above are plenty.

Agreed on saying the bulls have the best coach in the league.. but not the best team. Too much chicago bulls fandom! And are the bulls at the same caliber as the warriors? Does Love actually WANT to come here?

Welcome, and yes, that’s what this site is about… Chicago sports with a view from a die hard Chicago sports fan. And when the Bulls are healthy, which they haven’t been for 3 years, they ARE the best team. Best record in the Eastern Conference 2 straight years. We just haven’t had a chance to prove that in the playoffs outside of that 1st clash with the Heat… the year they lost to Dallas in the Finals. But as of right now, I guess you’re right. The Spurs are the best team in the NBA.

Give them Butler and Gibson if that’s all it takes to get Love. Their good regular season players. Not as talented as Chicago thinks and are over matched when the other NBA teams decide to play hard in the playoffs. Which is the only time the other teams play hard like the Bulls do all year. Bulls will win nothing with those two and they’ll want $$$ soon. They can be replaced with some other inexpensive free agent to go with LOVE; a true Superstar that plays hard all year just like the Bulls. He’s the scorer they need and gives you lots of intangibles with it. He is the right piece.

If that’s all it took, maybe you’re right, but I disagree that they’re only good regular season players. Taj is legit, regular season, postseason, any season. Jimmy is still relatively young, and although isn’t a consistent scoring threat, he has a lot of intangibles that any team making a run at it needs. This is why I would rather NOT move them. They are pieces that we need. Do we need Love? Maybe, but it sure would be nice to have him. What’s it gonna take to get him?
