Once a week, almost every week, I play racquetball with my father. Before my brother moved to the ‘burbs, all three of us used to play together (they played when I lived in Los Angeles for a few years). Our current health club, where we have been playing racquetball for about 15 years is closing. So last night, we were all reunited again as we commemorated the closing of the health club, and the end of an era.
Era: distinctive period of history: a period of time made distinctive by a significant development, feature, event, or personality
There are always mixed feelings when an era ends. When our favorite teams are changed forever by the departure of one of our favorite players or coaches… or both. Example 1a: the end of the Bulls dynasty back in 1998. I’m not sure why Jerry Reinsdorf didn’t walk into that locker room with a book of blank checks. Michael, Phil, Scottie, Dennis, please write down an amount. I guarantee if that team was kept together, they would have won AT LEAST 1 more title. This was especially true because of the strike-shortened season that followed in 1998-1999. Can you say number 7? I can also say number 9. We all know that if MJ didn’t go play baseball for a while, that’s a 9-peat. Imagine that. As great as that Bulls dynasty was, they could have possibly won 9 straight titles!!! That’s just about an entire decade folks. As far as the feelings on the end of this era, I guess you could say I was pissed, as most people probably were.

Let’s not even get started on the 85 Bears. If any team had dynasty written all over it, it was the 85 Bears: the best football team in history. Some people still hold a grudge to this day over the breakup of that team. I’m not one of them, maybe because I was too young at the time, although I do know that team could have at least won another 1-2 Super Bowls. I DO hold a grudge against Charles Martin. I do remember when he slammed McMahon to the turf late in the 1986 season. Just one of the many reasons I hate Green Bay.
So in my book, those were 2 eras that ended too soon. Both caused by cheap owners; both creating feelings of anger. Let’s NOT do this with the Hawks. I feel like the ownership of that team can be trusted. They’ve locked up the core. They continue to improve. Get ready to enjoy this ride for a long time Hawks fans. A matchup against the Wild in the 2nd round that starts tonight does not scare me. Maybe that’s scary in itself? I just cannot see any way that we’re not watching the Hawks play for that 6th cup in a few weeks.
Although our health club is closing, we will be looking to continue our racquetball playing elsewhere. Although I am pissed about the health club closing, and how they communicated that information to us, it’s time to move on. That’s what we do when eras end, we move on. It would be nice to always have an era end at the “right time”, but when is that “right time”? With some many factors in the end of an era, it’s not always easy to see when the end should be. I do know that racquetball will continue for the foreseeable future; and the Hawks will keep winning for the foreseeable future. Let’s hope nothing ends this era before its time.
