May 19, 2019: Series Taken

posted in: Cubs | 0

With a win on Sunday night, this weekend in Washington became another series taken for the Cubs.  That’s winning or tying a series in 11 of the last 12.  Isn’t that what this thing is all about?  We’ve done math before… 2 out of 3 wins across an entire season is going to get you 108 wins.  That should be good enough to get into the postseason, right?

The Cubs have been playing really well; it’s so good to see.  Yes, just as if they weren’t playing well, we have to keep in mind this is early, but it’s certainly better to be ahead of the game then to be digging a hole for ourselves to climb out of.  There will surely be slumps/losing streaks along the way, but those are that much more palatable when the team is playing well overall.  The Cubs currently sit 1.5 games ahead in the NL Central.

A quick look around the league doesn’t reveal many surprises at this point.  In the National League, you have us, the Phillies who we’ll welcome to Wrigley for 4 games starting Monday, and the Dodgers as your division leaders.  The first wild card is the Brewers.  The second wild card is the surprise of the bunch; I don’t think we’ll see the Pirates last much longer in that spot.  In the American League, the Astros were expected to lead their division, the Yankees were going to be in the mix, and then the surprise of the division leaders, the Twins are on top.  They’re 4.5 games clear of the pre-season favorite Indians.  Let’s see how long things look like that in the AL Central.  In third place is none other than the Sox… I’ve seen tweets about them playing over 500 ball… you have to start there.  Get over 500, and anything can happen.  The other surprise is the Rays, who sit in the 1st wild card position; will they have staying power?  The other wild card is the Indians, who sit 1.5 games ahead of the Red Sox.  When the dust settles, I’m sure we’ll have the regular guys…

It feels good for the Cubs to be one of those “regular guys” in the postseason.  Looking to make it 5 straight appearances this year, who would have thunk it?  I see people complaining about the Cubs being put on Sunday Night baseball… Hey, I don’t like the broadcasting team any more than you do, but the reason the Cubs are playing so much Sunday Night baseball is because they’re GOOD!!!  I can put up with A-Rod talking out of his ass if it means the Cubs continue to play well; that’s an easy trade off.

Long way to go, but I have to mention that I have noticed the Cardinals creep back down to 500… more like where they should be… as they sit 4.5 games off the lead.  I already said I don’t think the Pirates will keep it up, but… if they keep playing decent, I can certainly see a scenario where the Reds pass the Cardinals.  That means the Cardinals will be in last place… that makes me happy, but… I do have to remember they are the pesky birds, and will most likely be in the mix most of the way.

Ready for the next series to start… not so ready to see the pitcher who will be taking the mound for the Phillies in the opener…  Go Cubs!!!
