May 19, 2017: Buying Low

I’m tired of all this talk about Schwarber.  Take him out of lead off.  He’s not a left fielder.  He’s a DH only.  Trade him.  What’s wrong with him?  What’s wrong with you?

Take Friday for example.  First, he makes an outstanding catch.  Then, he botches a play in the middle of a rain storm where he ended up in the infield.  And now he sucks in the field?

The kid is a baller plain and simple.  He plays ball.  He gives it his all every time out there.  Maybe he’s trying too hard at the plate.  Maybe he’s just going through a sophomore slump, but really he hasn’t even played one full season in the majors.  How many regular season games has Schwarby played?

109. Yeah, that’s it.  Not even one full season.  Of course it’s not what he’s done in these 109 games that has already made him legendary.  I know we haven’t forgot what this kid has done in his 14 postseason games thus far.

5 home runs, 10 RBIs, and a .364 batting average.  We would not have won the World Series without him, period.

I still believe he could catch; kind of tough with Contreras holding down the fort there.  But, once Montero is gone next year, most likely, maybe Schwarby may get some more innings behind the plate.  I guess let’s see how he does in his first full season after knee surgery.  It’d be nice to have him as a backup catcher for the next handful of years, especially with the position depth the Cubs have all over the place.

And as far as the leadoff thing goes, I like it, but it really doesn’t matter.  I trust Joe to put him where he thinks is best. Could Kyle be pressing too much being in that leadoff spot?  Maybe.  Maybe he’ll bat in another position at some point and that’s ok.  When you have this many pieces to put in place, it may take some time to get it right.  It may take some time for Schwarby, wherever his regular position in the lineup will be.  I’m not worried about it.

Maybe he’s pressing so much because he missed all of last year…but he shouldn’t be.  He was there when it mattered most, when we needed him most.  He came through after not playing all year.  He was out there busting it down the line; he even stole a base in the World Series…yeah, no shit.  I love everything about this kid, but I can say that about the majority of this roster.

So, someone will have to go…eventually.  Maybe someone in the majors, or maybe one of our prospects…maybe Schwarby, but I doubt it, and I’m good with it.  This kid is only going to get better.  Once he adjusts to the adjustments that have been already made to him, the sky is the limit.  This kid will put the work in.  Haven’t we already seen this???

So enough about Kyle, but I guess we’re in the mode of dealing with, as they say, rich people problems.  We have to look for something to be concerned about.  We have to find something to meet our fix of the worrysome Cubs fan in us all.  I get it.  But for me, one of those things…is not Schwarber.  Here’s hoping for the end of that, a couple more 450 plus foot bombs to get him going, and the continuation of an already legendary Cubs career.  As Theo said, I’m definitely buying low right now. Go Schwarby and Go Cubs!

being one of those you referenced above, i was NOT picking on schwarby. i merely thought that batting lead-off brings it’s own perceived ‘pressure’, and in that position, yes, i believe he was adding his own pressure performing to the peak and pressing too hard. i do believe he will calm down now, and get back to himself, and all will fall into place.

The legend of Schwarbino! This guy is a monster. Yes, he is struggling with the bat. Yes, he is not a great fielder. Who cares where he hits. Bottom line, the guy busts his ass and can flat out rake. 109 regular season games, major knee surgery, playing a position he never did before, and the list goes on…stop already and give the guy a break. We saw how clutch he is in the postseason and world series. We see how hard he works. We see how far he makes it fly. Sit back and enjoy. Like the idea of not having him play catcher this year. Let that knee heal completely before inserting him once or twice a week next year. He can only get better in left field as he is still learning the position. He will make adjustments at the plate and have his average around .250 by the break. Relax, buy low, and GO CUBS GO!!!
