May 18, 2023: Paying for Wins

There is this philosophy, among die-hard fans, that when it comes to betting on the other team, you’d be happy to lose it. Since you really want YOUR team to win, you’re technically paying for wins. I shared this philosophy for a minute, but… if you’re watching that game, and you have money on that other team, it doesn’t feel good. Sure, would I mind losing a couple bucks if that meant my team won? If I had the money, yeah. Still, losing money kind of puts a damper on your team winning, and if there’s enough money involved, you could end up kind of rooting for the other team… it’s complicated; I try to avoid this situation. There’s a similar thinking for teams that you hate; take for example the Lakers. In Game 2 against Denver, I really did think the refs would step up their game, and the Lakers would win; so, I bet on it. I took a small bet on the Lakers ML; that’s all I have left in my account, so… When I flipped on the very end of the game, after watching another episode of Succession, I saw the Nuggets had it. Let me tell you: I didn’t mind losing that bet one second.

Not sure if you watched any of that game, but I’d like to talk about 3 plays in particular; these few plays really made me smile. The first one happened early on. Lebron heading down the court wide open; he looked like he was going to do some fancy dunk, you know, like the ones he did in all the dunk contests he participated in… He fumbled the ball and it went out of bounds. Thankfully, there were no Nuggets around, or he would have been looking for a foul. Not this time buddy. That was a funny play. The 2nd one involved my favorite player Mr. James again; this time, he did something that we’re used to seeing him do. He absolutely flopped as he was battling Jokic. If you haven’t seen it, look it up. This will be on his highlight reel of flops; yes, there is a whole reel, for this guy who has never been on a team that flops… This one was really bad. Can you believe this is some peoples’ GOAT? The 3rd one came in crunch time, where LBJ actually made a really nice defensive play. He drove to the hole to lay the ball in, and… missed the rim; no, not nothing but net, nothing but backboard. Eek… I’m not even going to mention his 3 point shooting, or losing the ball on the last possession just like Game 1; oops, I just did. I’m chuckling now…

Yeah, that was the best $1 I ever spent, watching the Lakers lose my ML bet. Is the series over? Well, not so fast. I’d love to think so, but… the refs will be on their A game in LA this weekend. Ideally, Silver and his henchmen would love this to go 7 games with a Lakers victory, or maybe, if the money is right, and Papa Vegas gives the green light, the Nuggets actually do proceed; that would be great. Out of the remaining teams, definitely wouldn’t mind seeing Denver hoist their first ever championship trophy. More to come… Stay tuned, as King Flop and the Fakers take on Denver on Saturday night in LA-LA land…
