May 18, 2016: Have You Ever

Have you ever went to a baseball game on the road and watched 9 innings in person and then watched the end of the game on your couch at home… live?  That is precisely what happened to me last night with the Cubs Brewers game.

It’s been crazy at work.  Yes, I’ve had days off here and there, but haven’t taken a full week since August; that’s too damn long.  So I said screw it… let’s take a half day, and drive up to Milwaukee.  So my wife, son, and I piled in the car, and hit 94.  Scored some tickets the night before to be picked up at will call.  We flew up there, and after lunch at Culver’s, headed to the park.  $12 parking ain’t bad… but the gates didn’t open until 5:40pm.  So we had to wait… thankfully, there was a little playground outside the park that my son enjoyed immensely.

Finally, in the gates, and down to the field to watch some BP.  My wife was excited… yes, not only to see Jake Arrieta on the field, but for the free WIFI in Miller Park; that more than made up for the long wait outside the stadium.  I yelled at a few of the guys, and got a wave from Jason Hammel; Jake looked our way and kind of nodded to the thrill of the 3 young girls standing next to us with Arrieta jerseys on.  The ball was flying out, and I was looking forward to some runs.  After all, last Wednesday’s game ended 1-0; 9 full innings with no runs scored.  This game would surely be different… it better be different.

After 8 full innings, it was 1-0 again.  I started to think that I wouldn’t go see another Cubs game again this year.  I mean, the 2 games I go to, and 0 combined runs scored?!?  So as we made our way to the exit, I told my son the Cubs had one more chance.  And after he threw and hit a couple balls in the kids section, we watched… and they scored.  Tie game 1-1.  Whew!

But now what?  My son is already spent, the game has already been long, and we still have to drive home.  Had it just been me, or me and some friends, or even just me and my wife, we would have stayed.  But, we didn’t.  It wasn’t that hard of a decision, and it turned out to be a really good one.

As we flew down 94 on the way home, Pat & Ron helped navigate our trip.  We all know Pat is great, but I really like Ron Coomer too.  They make a good team, and for some good listening on the radio when necessary.  As it turns out, we made it all the way home, and turned on the TV just in time to see Travis Wood get walked to give the Cubs the 2-1 lead, which would be the final score.  That was crazy!

It was a nice win, and although I didn’t stay in person to see it, I was still happy.  At the end of the day, it’s about the W’s, and stacking them up.  At 28-10, the Cubs continue to lead the majors.  A day game on slate for today, about to start momentarily.  It’s time to plan the next road trip.  Wrigley, the Cell, PNC, and Miller crossed of my son’s list; Cincy or St. Louis next?  We’ll see, and I can’t wait.  What will the next road trip hold.  Certainly we wouldn’t be able to repeat the feat that happened last night.  That may be a one time thing.  Go Cubs!
