Not necessarily on the top of everybody’s vacation list, Oakland does have its perks. The biggest one being located across the bridge from San Francisco.  Not really a lot of great sports memories happening in Oakland. In fact, it’s usually a house of horrors for the Sox. That all changed this Sunday as the Sox swept the Athletics in Oakland for the first time since 1997.

I do have a great Oakland memory. It made the list of best games I attended when we went to see the Bears play the Raiders there. The game itself kind of sucked, but it was everything else that made this trip memorable.  The first part of it taking place in the aforementioned San Fran the night before the game. Fun times.  Game day was cool too. Getting to party with some Oakland fans, and most importantly not getting our asses kicked, made the pregame festivities enjoyable.  As I mentioned before, I respect die hards of any team as long as our interests don’t interfere with each other. They did that day, but we watched amicably.

As far as the Athletics go, I did get into their stadium, since they share it with the Raiders. I did see them play before in the old Comiskey. I remember sitting in left field trying to catch batting practice HRs from Canseco and McGwire.  They seem to have a pretty good fan base. They’ve been a pretty successful franchise.  I remember rooting for them in the World Series against the Dodgers. Yeah, Gibson changed that series forever with that pinch hit game winning home run in Game 1. I remember throwing the TV guide across the room. The As never recovered.

I liked the movie Moneyball too. Billy Beane portrayed by Brad Pitt was and is an innovative baseball man. It hasn’t gone too well for them lately. They had a chance last year, but came up short.  The Cubs now have their rent a pitcher from the wild card game in Jon Lester. We also acquired their top prospect in Addison Russell last year. Thank you very much. And, we even got back one of the guys we traded for him in Jason Hammel. Not bad.

The other guy in that deal… Well, he was on the mound Sunday pitching on the other side of town against his short term team. He kept the good quality starting pitching going. Besides Rodon’s rough start, which the Sox won anyways, it has been quality starts by every other starter. Jeff Samardzija hasn’t been great yet, but I think he’ll be fine. If so, the Sox can keep improving on that record. After their 5th straight win Sunday, they sit at .500.

It’s important to beat the teams you should beat, even if it is on the road, even if it is in a place you haven’t had much success. It’s also important to win games against teams in your own division. They have that chance next as they open a series at home against the Indians. This is the only team the Sox are ahead of currently; have to keep them down as they try to stay hot. It’s nice to have your ace throwing too.

So the trip to Oaktown wasn’t as bad as it usually is. I’ll be seeing an Oakland team again this year when the Raiders come to Soldier Field. I’m hoping it’s just as good of time, with the same result. That same result that the Soz got in each and every game of their weekend series. Let the wins go on…
