May 16, 2017: Another Debut

posted in: Cubs | 1

We’re really getting spoiled.  The hits just keep on coming.  I guess it all started during the 2011 draft.

It was Jim Hendry’s last draft and the first round pick that year was Javier Baez.  I’m thankful to Hendry for that one.  I liked him.  It wasn’t his fault that we couldn’t end the drought during his run.  He tried.  No hard feelings there… and he did have his impact on the 2016 champs with his final draft.  That’s when it all started…

I think Joe Carter would qualify as a good 1st round pick; he was part of the trade to get Sutcliffe I do believe, so it wasn’t a total waste.. for the Cubs that is.  He went on to be a hero in Toronto.  Shawon-O-Meter Dunston was pretty decent for a bit; Palmerio made his bones elsewhere.  In 1995, we hit with Kerry Wood, although his arm issues prevented him from being a superstar; same for Prior in 2001.  That’s it… check it if you don’t believe me.  45 years, and all we have are those few names.  My how times have changed…

Since Hendry’s last draft pick in Baez, the Cubs first rounders have not been too shabby.  Theo is on a bit of a roll I would say.  He started off with Almora in 2012; I remember that one.  I remember watching MLB network and seeing how Almora’s dad built him a batting cage in his backyard.  I liked the pick then, and I still like it now.  I think he should be playing every day, but that day will come… that day will come.

The 2 pitchers that we also took in the first round in 2012 haven’t panned out:  Pierce Johnson and Paul Blackburn have not made an impact yet.  But back in 2013, Theo got back to what he knew best, and that was position players.  The golden boy was drafted in 2013; Kris Bryant may turn out to be the best Cub ever.  I was very happy with that pick… very happy… happier every day.

In 2014, I was hoping to get Carlos Rodon, but the Sox took him one pick ahead of us.  We then ended up taking the mighty Schwarbino; it’s sometimes good when you don’t get what you want.  Yeah, he’s struggling a bit so far, besides his 462 foot blast on Tuesday night in Wrigley, but I’m not worried.  Like Theo said, I’d be buying low on Kyle now, not selling, that’s for sure.  After all, if Theo says it, it will be done.

That brings us to the 2015 pick; no first round pick in 2016.  Ian Happ made his debut this weekend in St. Louis with a bang; his Wrigley debut was just as good.  Another first rounder looking like another stud.  Sure, it’s only 3 games in, but what the heck are the Cubs going to do with this guy?  I thought he’d be the center piece of a trade to get that starter, but now… maybe we need to pick somebody else.  As far as first impressions go, this guy nailed it.

Yeah, it was just another debut by a first round Cubs draft pick.  Like I said, we are spoiled.  Gone are the days waiting for Mike Harkey, Corey Patterson, Josh Vitters, and Brett Jackson.  Welcome Baez, Almora, Bryant, Schwarby, and Happ.  Are there any questions on why the Cubs won and why they are positioned to win for a long time?  Other Chicago teams take note!  By the way, nice win Tuesday night in Wrigley; hopefully the start of a streak.  Go Cubs!

Baez, almora, KB, schwarby, and happ…all basically starting for the Cubs now. Pretty impressive drafting and loyalty to these guys so far. What will happen at the deadline? KB and Schwarbs are locked to stay. Almora is about 80% while baez and happ would be about 50-50. This Happ kid seems like another pure hitter with the ability to play multiple spots. What a luxury to have with a team so deep and not enough spots to go around. This is where Maddon’s importance comes into play. Being able to juggle playing time while keeping egos in check is no small detail. Guys feel like they should play everyday. Young guys might have that me first attitude. Joe needs to keep everyone happy with playing time and mentally with their roles. At times, maybe a trip back down to the minors will be in store. The goal remains the same…repeat! Get on the Cubbie blue train and accept your roles! GO CUBS GO!!!
