May 16, 2016: Losing Happens

posted in: Cubs, White Sox | 2

You didn’t think the Cubs and Sox would keep winning at an 80% clip did you?  Yeah, that would equal 120 wins for the entire season, which would be a major league record.  Now I’m not saying that can’t happen, but losing happens… let’s get a grip.

After the Cubs lost that doubleheader vs the Padres, there seemed to be some panic in the fan base.  Yes, I freely admit I do not like losing, and the ups and downs during the season can sometimes cause whiplash, but it was 2 games.  Yes, it was against the feeble Padres, but it’s going to happen.  I’m glad they “bounced back”… as much as a now 27-9 team needs to, and won the series against the Pirates.  Wait a second… they didn’t sweep them?  What the heck is wrong with the Cubs?

And the Sox… a losing week?  So much for that hot start… Of course I’m being sarcastic.  Yes, the Sox are no longer the best team in the AL, but they still have a nice lead afforded by their awesome start.  And this is the Sox remember?  They usually start like crap.  So if you factor that in, I’m thinking this is somewhat sustainable on the South Side too.  The Rangers are no slouch, and if it wasn’t for the Sox bullpen, they would have won that series.  Same in New York.  The bullpens have led to some of the losing on both sides of town.

Is help needed?  Sure.  Why not.  There are reliable arms in both pens, but more would never hurt.  For the Sox, just get it to the closer, and you’re good.  Same for the Cubs really.  Yes, Rondon got touched up yesterday in a non save situation, but he’s been solid.  Yes, Strop has had his moments too… he worries me more than anybody.  How about Albers in the Sox bullpen?  The bullpen will not be perfect, and yes, they will blow games.  It doesn’t mean we need overhauls.

But yes, I would look to add arms, in both pens.  With both the Cubs and Sox scoring a lot of runs late in games, the worst thing to happen is to give up more runs.  Not sure if that sounds right… let me try again.  Once you get into that last third of the game, you want your bullpen to hold steady.  Yes, you want to hold those small leads, but giving up the lead… meaning, allowing the other team to tie it is not the end of the world.  We could still score and win.  It’s those tie games, or those games we’re losing by a run or two… to not give up any runs in those situations, and give our teams a chance to win, is all we can really ask for.  Giving both of our teams a chance this year has been a dangerous proposition.  That’s a great quality to have… that late run scoring, build on leads/comeback ability.  That’s the stuff that pushes that record up… better and better.

And yes, that’s still where the records stand today.  At 24-14, the Sox hold a 5 game lead in their division.  At 27-9, the Cubs hold an 8 game lead in theirs.  At the end of the day, it all starts with winning your division.  You win your division, you avoid the one game wild card, and you get into the second season.  That’s all we’re looking for here is a chance.  Only over 120 games left… so please remember, losing will happen.. don’t freak out too much.  Let’s just not make this a habit boys.  I like Chicago ruling the baseball world.

you are correct grasshopper……still gotta love our chances going forward. lose a couple, every team does that. it’s what happens after that. cubs still holding the best record in baseball, and sox coming home. need to right the ship and just start winning series, don’t need sweeps, just win the series, and we’ll be fine.

Losing most definitely does and will happen over 162 game season. It is really all about avoiding the long losing streaks and winning series. The Cubs and sox have afforded themselves some slack with their great starts. Just dont get comfortable with or settle on the first 40 games. Play winning baseball a series at a time. Forget about 120 wins. Win the divisions. Get home field. See what happens.
