May 15, 2023: Feeling Lucky

The Bears got the #1 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft not only due to their commitment to the tank, but a lucky break delivered to us by the Lovie and the Houston Texans. The Blackhawks got lucky in the NHL draft, due to that same commitment, plus, a lucky jump of 2 spots from the 3rd most likely to get the #1 pick to numero uno. Now, we turn our attention to the Bulls; feeling lucky?

The Bulls only have a 1.8% chance to get the #1 overall pick in the NBA draft lottery on Tuesday night. As everyone is reminding us, we only had a 1.7% chance to get the #1 overall pick the year Rose came out. So, you’re saying there’s a chance… Sure, why not! Chicago is on a roll baby; let’s make it 3 for 3. Let’s get the hat trick. If the Sox continue their torrid pace in the AL Central, there is a possibility we could continue the streak then. Let’s do this!!!

Now that the Bears and Blackhawks have both bottomed out and got that #1 pick, their path forward is clear; things are looking up…. can’t get much worse, so… But yeah, I’m feeling pretty damn good about the future for the Bears and Hawks; we’ll get to the Cubs and the Sox later. But the Bulls… what the hell are we going to do? Run back the same damn team we had this year, the team that squeaked into the 10 seed, and couldn’t win 2 games in a row to make the real playoffs? No, hell no… well, I hope not…

How would I do it? Trading Lavine would be my #1 goal this offseason. I’ve seen things where they may build around him… I hope that’s just a smoke screen; that would suck. We need to find a partner, and this shouldn’t be that difficult, to make this happen. I’m not really concerned with who we get back. If it’s some young talent, great. If it’s some expiring contracts, great. Some draft picks, yes. A combination of all three, fine. We need to figure out somebody else to build around; I don’t think we have that person on our roster today. In the short term, next 1-2-3 years maybe… sure. We still have DD at least one more year; that’s fine. What about Vooch? Well, he did play all 82 games this year; I respect that. But… 30M? And how can we get out from under the Ball contract? It’s not really pretty.

Sign Coby White and make him a starter. Why not? Put him in place of Zach. I know it’s not going to be better, but how much worse could it be? How much money will Coby get? If we can get him for a quarter of what we’re paying Zach, like about 10M per year, I’ll take that. Coby, DD, Caruso, and Patrick Williams for starters, plus whoever we get in the Lavine trade can be our starting lineup next year. Yes, no Lavine and no Vooch. THAT is the way to move forward.

At the same time, get younger. Get more draft picks. Reload financially to grab another player at that max slot. If the Bulls were to get lucky and grab the #1 slot, and get Webanyama, great. 98.2% says we won’t, so… we need a plan. Without Zach and Vooch, and that $70M of cap space, we can still stumble our way to the #10 seed; I believe that. I don’t want to watch the same frustrating team again. Let’s turn this thing around AKME. We need a big change, not small tweaks. Let’s get on a new path, with new faces. Please don’t run this same team back… please. Go Bulls!!!
