May 14, 2017: Back to the Grind

posted in: Cubs | 1

Yeah, after Friday’s game, it was more of the stuff we’ve been seeing from the Cubs.  St. Louis came back and won the next 2 games, getting that series win, and putting the Cubs 1 game under 500.  This season surely has seemed like a grind so far, but…

It’s only just begun.  The Cubs have had their roughest stretch lately, but look who they’ve been playing… some of the hottest teams in the league.  The first place Yankees, Rockies, and Cardinals all took it to us; I say more bad timing then anything.  Once the Cubs get going, they’ll be the ones dishing out this punishment.  Once they get going…

We got going on Saturday, thankfully missing the next 2 losses.  I was glad to have made the trip.  Busch Stadium became the 5th stadium that my son has been to; we’ll try to hit all of them eventually.  Maybe another this year???  The atmosphere at the game was a good one, being a rivalry game and all.  The Cubs actually just started making it a rivalry the last couple years, after the Cards owning us and having their collection of World Series trophies for so long.  After beating them in the 2015 NLDS and capturing our 1st World Series in forever last year, the rivalry has officially been upgraded.

We’re still a long way from the Cardinals level though when it comes to World Series trophies.  Yes, we finally got our 3rd, but the Cards have the 2nd most in MLB history next to the 27 Yankees trophies.  11 World Series championships was plastered all over the stadium; I think they put it in extra places for this Cubs series.  A proud history for sure; hoping the Cubs can start to catch up in that category.  I’d love to put the birds in the rear view mirror for the next decade.

It hasn’t happened yet this year though.  Fowler hasn’t been great for them, but they are still in first place.  Are we missing Fowler that much at the lead off spot?  The talk of the town now is Schwarby batting leadoff… as if THAT is our problem so far this year.  Yes, he hasn’t been good, but that’s only a small piece of it.  Fowler has already been hurt, his numbers are down, and he signed a multi-year big money deal.  The Cubs do have money, yes, but they also have many players in the chamber; Almora for one… we saw another in the 2nd and 3rd games in St. Louis with Happ making his debut.  I’ll love Dexter forever, but no regrets there.

Yet, the Cubs sit at a game under 500.  We’ve talked about the reasons why; now it’s time to turn things around.  I have faith that they will.  It’s amazing how much more faith I have now after capturing the title last year.

I debuted that hat in St. Louis for the game… the one with the trophy on the side of the Cubs hat.  I couldn’t be prouder to wear it.  I don’t care that it’s the only one I’ve seen in my lifetime.  I certainly want to see more, but I’m forever grateful that I’ve seen one.

Back on 55 headed towards Chicago, getting ready to get back to the grind myself.  Had to hit up the Waffle House before heading north.  Drive home was a lot smoother, besides the helicopter on the other side of the expressway tending to a nasty motorcycle accident.  Scary stuff.

Before getting back to the grind, it was time to celebrate our mothers on their day, although I say every day is their day.  Hope all the Moms had a very happy Mother’s Day!

The Cubs are having a very average year so far as they now sit in 4th in the nl central, 3.5 games out. Yes, it is early, no time to panic or worry, but how about getting it going boys. Expectations are sky high. The play has not been. So many guys are struggling: schwarby, rizzo, russell, zobrist, baez. The list is long and that makes us hopeful that the turnaround is bound to happen, sooner than later. These guys will, and must, hit for the Cubs to click offensively. Letting go of fowler, the leadoff guy, might be hurting the Cubs more than they think. It sure seemed like it did last year when he was hurt. But at the end of the day, it was the right move to make. He did his job for the Cubs so no need to over pay the man…thanks and move on! Same goes for chappy. I think Theo did well this offseason. Guys are just struggling right now. Theo will make a move or few when the time is right. So will this Cubs team. GO CUBS GO!!!
