It was the Blackhawks, 11-2 in closeout games the past 6 seasons, vs the Wild, 5-0 at home this postseason, matched up in Game 6 Tuesday night. Was it ever in doubt? Heck yes it was. Yet, at the end of the night, as the game went to overtime, Kane swooped in and lit the lamp, and the Hawks are moving on. They are truly the closeout kings.
Big time players make big time plays. As the Penguins and Sidney Crosby (1 goal in his last 17 playoff games) become the Sharks of the East, and get knocked out of the playoffs again, the Hawks dynamic duo keeps making it happen when it counts the most. Let’s look at their numbers in the now 12-2 record for the Blackhawks in closeout games:
Patrick Kane: 11 goals, 6 assists, +5 rating, 3 game winning goals
Jonathan Toews: 7 goals, 11 assists, +5 rating, 3 game winning goals

How good are these guys? They routinely take their games to the next level: Toews with 4 game winning goals this playoff season, and Kane with 4 game winning OT goals in his playoff career. What more can we ask for? Another cup, and another, and another… how’s that? The sky is the limit with this team, with this duo. Both top 3 picks, Toews #3 in 2006 and Kane #1 in 2007, they are in their prime… with ways to go. Sit back and enjoy!
But they’re not the only story here. Kane is not the only hero tonight. How about Corey Crawford? Let’s face it; the Wild outplayed us most of the game, and the only reason we went to OT was Crawford. This guy has came a long way. He still gives up some bad goals, and we still talk crap about him (me included), but this guy deserves a ton of credit. Another Blackhawk draft pick from 2003 (52nd overall), he is becoming a premier goalie. Another cup would solidify that, if there is any doubt. He got the monkey off his back, and enjoyed his 1st Cup last year with his MVP performance (per the official MVP of the 2013 playoffs Patrick Kane). He’s on his way again. He makes the big saves now. When the Wild spent the majority of the evening in our zone, firing shots at him, crashing into him, he stood tall. Thank you Crow! Enjoy a cold one tonight; you deserve it.
Who will challenge us? Was this series ever in doubt? We’ll see the winner of Ducks-Kings next, and I’m not sure who I’d rather see, except we would have home ice vs the Kings. At the end of the day, does it really matter? Did we already play our toughest series of the playoffs in the 1st round vs the Blues? Only time will tell, but I’m not worried about any team. Teams better worry about us.
So the Hawks remain standing on top of the mountain taking on all comers in the quest to repeat. Only 8 wins away, the Cup is in our reach again. Who wants to climb that mountain? Who wants to knock us off? Bring it on baby, bring it on!!!
