May 12, 2017: That Rivalry

posted in: Cubs | 2

The Friday morning of game day had arrived.  Before then, it was off to the St. Louis Zoo… right after free breakfast that is.

It was a short 20 minute drive into the city.  It only started backing up where seemingly all the expressways in St. Louis merged; it was a bit confusing, even for this big city folk.  As we merged, there was a guy… walking on the expressway.  I don’t recall ever seeing this before.  There he was… just walking towards oncoming merging traffic.  People gone crazy!  And that coming from me from Chicago, home of the crazy.  Anyways, I thought what if he started open firing… I quickly slid to my right as we drove right by him.  Welcome to St. Louis.

The zoo was phenomenal.  It was also free, which was one reason it was so great.  No, but seriously, other than the San Diego Zoo… the Columbus Zoo ranks up there too, this zoo was one of the best.  Besides the large number of animals, there was no shortage of Cubs Cardinals gear.

My son and I both with our t-shirts and caps on, drew many comments throughout the day.  Many other Cubs fans nodded, while a few others spoke up with a “Go Cubs” or “Headed to the game?” comments.  There were other comments from the Cards fans.  “Good luck tonight” was some pretty peaceful trash talking, while “You must be brave wearing that” was about as vicious as it got.  There were probably a lot of other dirty looks and mumbling under their breaths, but nothing visible or audible.  It was relatively tame… but we were only at the zoo.

Getting into the stadium later that evening would be much worse I’m sure… and I was surely wrong.  My wife was a bit worried headed down there… considering the great rivalry and all… considering how much I hate the Cardinals… and that was besides the fact that somebody got shot in Busch Stadium the week before.  Yeah, somebody fired into the stadium, grazing somebody on the arm… perfect timing.  Now, there was nothing to fear from my end, at least not being in attendance with my wife and 5 year old son.  Actually, I think it was my 5 year old son, looking awesome in his big Cubs jersey and Cubs hat, that probably mellowed out any and all potential drama, and for that, much respect to the Cards fans.  We had some conversations with a few of them and many nodding smiles as we walked to and around the stadium; not even one “Cubs suck”…  Maybe if it were just my wife and I it would have been different?  Maybe if it were my brother and I and some buddies it would have been different?

I’ve been to many road games supporting my teams; I wasn’t worried.  There’s a certain way you have to go about it.  You can’t show up at another team’s stadium, and expect to talk a whole bunch of crap without getting some back.  If you go in there with a good attitude, while cheering and supporting your team, in most cases, you’ll be OK.  That’s all we were about on this evening.

Well, we were also about winning in this series opener.  It was a fun game.  I clapped and cheered the Cubs on throughout the game, and kept my mouth shut…. well, for the most part.  There was one part in this game where I couldn’t help myself.  It was that rivalry coming out…. I had to let it out… just this once… it was the best play of the night.

St Louis red turds! My 5 year old son hates the cardinals, including the bird despite it being the Illinois state bird. We have some in our trees, and he wants to take em all out…hahaha.
Free food and zoo is an easy choice…cant beat free. As far as the tame turd fans, pretty standard I think, especially when with kids, although there may be a few that just dont care. If it were just us, Im sure we would have heard a few other things, but you’re right, you have to go into it ready to give and take in return. It gets tougher to stay civil after having a few drinks or if your team is losing and/or loses. In those cases, you better have really thick skin or things may take a bad turn. As we turn the attention back to the actual game, dont get caught napping, or else you might get picked…off!
