This latest heartbreak for the Bulls on Sunday was just one of many since the Jordan days. Some may say the Bulls are even cursed. It’s been 17 years this year since the last NBA title.
That’s really not that long of a wait. I mean, any team in this city looks OK next to the Cubs as far as title droughts go. We’ve already had our dynasty in the 90s; should we be satisfied? Some teams haven’t even won one title, let alone enjoy a decade of dominance. We didn’t only win a title, we didn’t only have a dynasty that produced 6 trophies whose banners hang from the rafters in the UC, we had the best team of all time, and the best player of all time. Although nobody, including any current or future Bulls team will ever reach these heights, that doesn’t mean we have to be done winning. It doesn’t mean that looking for a 7th NBA title is being greedy, is it?
We all know the history since that 1998 title. The Bulls got disbanded. MJ ended up in Washington, Phil ended up in LA, Pippen ended up in Houston, and Rodman ended up back at Crowbar. The Bulls ended up with Tim Floyd, the previous coach of Iowa State. So tell me again why we’re talking about Fred Hoiberg as our next coach? Those were the dark years with Floyd at the helm. They actually called my number for season tickets in 1999, and we enjoyed many games in the 300 level by ourselves. They were so bad then you couldn’t give the tickets away. We saw many losing efforts that season.
We did have some decent players, like Elton Brand. Of course, we dumped him, in the draft day deal that got us Tyson Chandler. We coupled that pick with local boy Eddy Curry, and tried to have our own version of the twin towers. That didn’t work out so well. These 2 boys were too young. Eddy never amounted to anything, but Tyson has grown into a fine player. We also had guys like Ron Artest and Brad Miller. They were solid, except Brad also liked to hit the bong, and Artest preferred Hennessy in the locker room over Gatorade. Of course, Ron was meant for greater things like a career in rap music, a name change, and many flagrant fouls and fines. We traded both of them to acquire Jalen Rose. We did have Jamal Crawford for a while, and man when he was hot he was hot; too bad he wasn’t hot more often. He’s turned into a really good player too. Then there was Jason (Jay) Williams. I loved the pick, except he too had other interests; his motorcycle riding cost him his career. Not until 2004 was there finally some light at the end of the tunnel, when new GM John Paxson selected Ben Gordon and Luol Deng in the NBA draft.

As far as the coaching carousel since Phil.. Tim Floyd, Bill Cartwright, Scott Skiles, and Vinny Del Negro. And we’re complaining about Tom Thibodeau??? Seriously, management needs to get on the same page here. Let’s not make another move that will stunt our growth. Fred Hoiberg is NOT the answer. I don’t think there is an answer out there; I think we already have the answer at coach.
Back to the players…the drafting of Rose was a bright spot, but with his litany of injuries, this Thibodeau led team seems to be snake bitten… until this year. Well, not even this entire year, since Rose was hurt again. But for the playoffs, we entered as healthy as we’ve been in 3 years. THIS was finally our chance. With the injuries happening to the other Eastern Conference playoff teams, it seemed like the stars were aligning…
This series is a MUST win for this Bulls team. There is no excuse why we cannot overcome LBJ and the Cavs… and even proceed further than that. THIS was supposed to be our year. When LBJ sank that prayer on Sunday, our hopes took another hit. Yes, the series is still tied, but it’s nerve racking time now.
The story of the Bulls post 1998 is ready to add another chapter. With all the ups and downs this current team has went through… man, we’ve paid our dues. After the Rose shot on Friday, I definitely thought the tide had turned; now we’re back to square one. The series continues tonight, and the saga continues. How will this series end?
