May 11, 2019: Real Draft

I’ve had plenty of fantasy drafts…  I’ve watched plenty of drafts in the 4 major sports…  On Saturday, this was the first real draft I was actually a part of.  I was doing the decision making as we compiled our 7-9 year old baseball team.

It was fun… I guess.  I knew each team got a number of “keepers”.  I had identified mine; I had 3… my son and 2 other kids that made the jump to this league.  One of the other coaches said he didn’t have any players that he was protecting in our initial meeting.  Yet, when the draft started, he had 3 just like me.  I guess that was OK, yet, his 3 were chosen by who he thought the 3 best kids were… not kids that he wanted to keep playing together, like me.  Not really the same, but since we both had 3… ok.  Now the other 2 teams in the league had a number of players they were keeping; I believe it was 6 each.  I guess I’m OK with that conceptually… for the right reasons, meaning, trying to keep your team together from the previous year.  I’m just not so sure that was the reasoning behind this 6… which was twice as many as we had.  If 6 was the magic number, then I should have had the first 3 picks in the draft to get to my 6, before we proceeded.  That would have been the fair way.  But, what do I know…

This is my first year in this league, so I’ll be watching and learning a lot.  Not going to come in and make waves right away.  After a year in the books, I’ll be better prepared for next year.  If something more serious than that comes up during the year, then I will address it.  But the way this “draft” started, it really puts a new team like mine behind the 8 ball.  Every one of the kids (except 1) that I had identified as draft targets were already “protected” on somebody else’s team.  That made for a very difficult draft.  I did get the one other kid I liked, but from there, it was looking at 26 other kids and guessing.  I ended up drafting these 2 sisters first; 1 of them is like 5 and a half feet tall.  I ended up drafting another sibling combo for my last 2 picks of the draft.  In between there, I tried my best to pick a potential diamond in the rough… not knowing much about any of these kids.  My assistant coach advised me to stay away from a kid or two… that one got hit in the head, don’t draft him…. or this kid was acting crazy, stay away from him… haha.  Once the dust settled, we had our 11 kids.  Looking around, it was quite obvious “on paper”, that we would be bringing up the rear in this year’s league.

But we all know about picking teams “on paper”…  not calling a title run or anything like that, but with a chance to practice with these kids, my goal will be to see improvements every week… and when I look at this team at the end of the year, they’re going to be a whole hell of a lot better than how they will look in our first practice on Thursday.  I’m looking forward to this year.  It may be a “rebuilding” year for us, but more than anything, it will be a year of growth, both for me, my son, and all the players on our team.  Let’s go A’s!
